Deacon Herman Carr was born on August 8, 1928, in Eudora, Arkansas to his parents, Solomon Carr, Sr. and Lee Ethel Smith Carr. He was the second child born in the family. He was raised surrounded by his brothers, Willie, Chester, Solomon, Jr., Thomas, and his sister, Donna. As a child, he enjoyed playing basketball.
He received his formal education in Enid, Oklahoma, where he graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in 1950. On October 17, 1950, Herman enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, he earned an Army Occupational Medal. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged.
On March 3, 1959, Herman united in holy matrimony to the former Martha Ann Smith. They first met in Enid, Oklahoma. To this union, Cloyce, Shelton, and Kerman were born. He was also the proud father of David and Rose. He was a loving and devoted husband and father who took great pride in the care and nurture of his family. He was later blessed with ten grandchildren, David, Jr., Kiona, Veronica, Laila, Providence, Perez, Shelton, Courtney, Taylor, and Keya. They fondly remember the nicknames of "Tug Boat", "Meathead," "Boo Boo," and "Babe" that he affectionately gave them. He also had eight great grandchildren. The family shared many happy and memorable moments together.
By profession, Herman was employed by the United States Postal Service as a Supervisor. He was hard- working, dedicated and performed his duties with a spirit of excellence. He retired after over twenty five years of service. He later became employed at the First Unitarian Church in Denver and remained there for over twenty-two years.
A man of faith and belief in the Lord, Herman was a faithful member of Divine Love Church of God In Christ serving under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Alphonso Hawkins. He served his church and the Lord as a member of the Deacon Board. He loved his church and the fellowship shared with his church family.
Herman was a fun-loving man who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed playing golf and dominoes. He also enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man. To know Herman was to love him.
He is preceded in death by a son, Shelton D. Carr; his parents, Solomon and Lee Ethel Carr; 3 brothers; and 1 sister.
Deacon Herman Carr departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on March 22, 2019, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include his loving and devoted wife of 60 years, Martha A. Carr of Denver, Colorado; 3 sons, David L. Carr of Enid, Oklahoma, Cloyce D. (Joy) Carr of Enid, Oklahoma and Kerman R. (Priscilla) Carr of Denver, Colorado; 1 daughter, Rose M. Carr-Lavan of Enid, Oklahoma; 1 brother, Solomon Carr, Jr. of Enid, Oklahoma; 10 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; his god-daughter, Edmonia Jackson of Denver, Colorado; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and many friends.
