Helen Anderson

March 20, 1931 — August 26, 2018

“A woman of strong faith, Never been shaken by anything, whatever comes around in life.” Jocelyn Dunbar Helen Ruth Anderson was born in San Augustine, Texas on March 20, 1931 to parents, Reverend Johnny W. Garrett and Marie Maxie. Helen was the eldest of four children and the only daughter. She was cherished by her three brothers Johnnie Garrett, Clarence Garrett, and Charles Maxie. At the young age of 15, Helen moved from her childhood home in Texas and relocated to Denver. Helen was a loving and devoted wife to Harry Miller Anderson. They shared a special union for 35 plus years before his death in 1994. She was a proud mother to five children, Alonzo Buggs, Winnie Marie Glasper (Pete), Ruth L. Buggs, Jean Buggs, and Eugene Jackson (Cynthia). She embraced as her own, Charlene, Rhodora, and Mattie. She shared special kinship with Bertha Johnson and Katie Carter (her sisters) and was affectionately called “Auntie Helen” by their children. Early in Life Helen accepted Jesus Christ. She served many years as an usher and choir member for Kinship Baptist Church. She re-dedicated her life to Christ, and later joined Solid Rock Missionary Baptist Church until her health declined. Helen was a loyal and devoted employee of the City and County of Denver, working for the Police Administration for over 20 years before retiring. Helen had affection for travel. Sharing favorite life stories of domestic travel to Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Nevada, and California just to name a few. She was blessed to travel internationally, cruising through Eastern and Western Caribbean, and jet-setting to Hawaii, Japan, and Asia. Helen showered her family and friends with love and attention. She provided an ear to listen, shoulder to lean on, never judged or spoke unkindly of others and was filled with joy and wisdom. Helen shared precious and unforgettable moments with her family watching television and enjoying her favorite shows such as Judge Judy, Cash Cab, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardyâ₦she literally kept the Game Show Network in business only flipping the channels when the re-runs of Family Feud became exhaustive. Helen passed on strong work ethic to her family. She demonstrated not to walk through life in fear, work hard, enjoy life, love hard and pray. Helen was true socialite, she was a gracious host and she loved formal attire. She was a devoted member of the Fleur De Lis and Red Hat Club. One of her special joys were cooking and selling the dinners to help with fundraising. Helen was called home to Glory late Sunday evening on August, 26, 2018. Her family and friends will miss her smile, laugh, patience, her availability no matter what time of day or night, her strength and her optimism. She was blessed in life, leaving behind to cherish her memories her five children, 14 Grand Children, 23 Great Grand Children, and 9 Great Great Children. Her cousin (sister), Winnie Pearl of Houston, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Always in good spirit and never complaining, loved and adored by her family.
