On Sunday, January 17, 2021, Haywood James Hammond, a loving son, brother, Uncle, husband, father and grandfather passed away at the age of 70. Haywood was born on January 10, 1951, to his parents, Haywood H. and Octavia (Hammond) Stewart in Newark, New Jersey. Haywood J. was raised in Newark and as a young child attended Dayton St. Elementary School. He and his little sister, Toni were “thick as thieves” and he would not let anyone touch a hair on her head! Haywood and his family moved to Denver, Colorado in 1971. He was just turning 21 years old and looking forward to his new journey to live the next exciting chapter of his life!
Haywood and Ethal (Shon) were happily married on December 7, 1985 and soon welcomed a beautiful baby daughter, Haylee Lark Rebecca Hammond. They shared good laughs, good food and good times. He enjoyed fishing, football, baseball, cooking and watching westerns, which he called “shoot em ups”. For all those who knew him well, he enjoyed being called “The Wood, and I know I’m Good”! Haywood was a happy-go-lucky salesman who was selling SUNSHINE! He never changed course nor did he change his attitude. He cherished his family. Haywood lived his life carefree and stayed true to his core, the core of who he was.
Haywood James is preceded in death by his parents, Haywood H. and Octavia R. Stewart. He is survived by his brother, Ronald D. Stewart, his sister, Toni D. Fisher, his six children: Grover, Shambi Milton, Mikeal Milton, Lance Meriwether, Audra Meriwether, and Haylee Lark Rebecca Hammond; several grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends and supporters.
