Gladys Smith

So loved by her family, Gladys Smith was born in Abbott, TX on July 9, 1924 as the third child to the late Thomas Melvin and Essie Wagner. Gladys accepted the Lord as her savior at an early age and continued to serve Him until He called her home January 12, 2016. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Calvin O. Smith, and her youngest daughter, Frankie L. Bottoms. During her teenage years, Gladys Melvin met Calvin O. Smith at Dayspring Baptist Church in West, TX which led to a union that resulted in five children. The marriage lasted 51 years before God called Calvin O. Smith home. Mrs. Smith's nursing career began in Tyler, TX and due to health problems, the family relocated to Denver in 1963. She furthered her nursing career at National Jewish Health Center before obtaining her Associates Degree for Early Childhood Development at the North Campus of the Community College of Denver. While living in Denver, Gladys became a member of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. She served her church under the pastoral leadership of Pastor Phil Gholston. She served as a Deaconess for many years. Gladys was a proud and loving mother and grandmother. She leaves to cherish her memory; two daughters, Mary Ann Phelps (Samuel) of Oakley, CA, Patsy Maxfield (Ray) of Denver, CO; two sons, Calvin O. Smith Jr (Cathie) of Denver, CO and Fenis G. Smith (Janet) of Haslet, TX. Mrs. Gladys Smith also leaves to cherish her memory 17 grandchildren, 59 great-grandchildren, a host of other relatives and many friends. Mrs. Smith will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and confidant. She was compassionate, loved God, and would help anyone in need. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful woman. To know Gladys was to love her. To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven. A time to be born and a time to die. Eccl. 3:1-2
