Gertrude Edwards

October 10, 1918 — September 23, 2016

Those we love remain with us, for love itself lives on, and cherished memories never fade because a loved one's gone; those we love can never be more than a thought apart; for as long as there is memory, they'll live on in the heart. Gertrude Edwards was born on October 10, 1918, in Italy, Texas, to her parents, Henry Jennings and Susie Lawton Jennings. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, Wesley, Costonia and her sisters, Bessie, Georgia, and Lessie. As a child, she enjoyed cooking, dancing and going to the movies. She received her early education in Texas, where she attended Stafford High School. On July 14, 1938, she united in holy matrimony to Ross Edwards, in Italy, Texas. They first met while attending a picnic. To this union, three children, Ray, Sue and Larry were born. They remember her as a mother, who took great pride in the care and nurture of her family. Ross preceded her in death. She was later blessed with three grandchildren, Lawrence, Carnell, and Kimberly, who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They lovingly called her "Gertrude" and fondly remember her as being firm but fair. She often sat down with them and shared her many life experiences. By profession, Gertrude was employed by Brookside Restaurant as the Head Cook. She was hard working, dependable, and worked well with her co-workers. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Gertrude accepted the Lord as her personal savior at a very early age. She was a member of the Mt. Zion AME Church in Italy. She believed in the power of prayer and that everyone needed to have the right relationship with the Lord. Gertrude was a fun loving woman, who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed spending quality time with family and friends, watching movies, and shopping. Her closest friend, May Katherin, shared a close friendship that spanned for many years. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful lady, who had carried a gentle smile that would lite any room she entered. To know Gertrude was to love her. Gertrude Edwards departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on September 23, 2016, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her daughter, Roy Sue Stewart of Arvada, Colorado; her son, Larry (Camilla) Edwards of Denver; 2 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and many friends.
