George Blake

July 21, 1936 — January 30, 2019

George Sylvester Blake III was born July 21, 1936, in Houston, Texas to George Sylvester Blake II and Lela Richards Blake. George was the second child born in the family. The middle child of three, he was raised with an older sister, Virgie Compton and a younger brother, Richard Blake. He graduated from Jack Yates High School, Houston, Texas in 1954.

George married Donnie Carter in 1957. Through this union three children were born; Walter Eugene, Paula Renae, and Pamela Bernice. George moved his family to Denver, Colorado in 1963. Here he worked for The Electronic Parts Company, then embarked on a career with the Honeywell Corporation.

Throughout his life, George loved music ranging from singing, playing the trumpet, and listening to a variety of music genres – particularly jazz. He accumulated music in multiple formats ranging from records that played at 78 rpm through compact discs. His collection of music was extensive enough to occupy the walls of a large room.

In 1975 George was promoted to corporate instructor with Honeywell and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Here he spent much of his spare time coaching football and officiating football, softball, and basketball. After retiring from Honeywell, he filled his extra time in a variety of ways including working as a host at the Mystic Lake Casino. Here he met several celebrities, as well as, Ms. Delores Pearson.

On May 19, 2001 George and Delores, "De," were married. George and De moved to Colorado in 2008 to be near family. Not giving up his love of sports, he worked for a year under his son as an assistant coach for the DSST Green Valley Ranch boys' soccer team. When he could no longer manage the rigors of officiating and coaching, he satisfied his zest for sports through spectator participation.

On January 30, 2019, surrounded by family, George departed this life. He leaves behind his wife, Delores Pearson Blake, Aurora; his son, Walter (Susan) Blake; his daughter, Pamela Blake (Victor) Wimberly; his stepchildren, Danielle LeRoy, Aurora, Ericka (Vincent) DeFante Minneapolis, MN, Damean Schley, Duluth, MN; grandchildren, Mark (Tiffany) Bergner, Atlanta, GA, Jabari Blake, Jelani Blake, Aisha Blake, Alyssa Wimberly, all of Colorado, and Damontay Wimberly, Norfolk, VA; four step-grandchildren, Asha Blakes, Brittney LeRoy, Cole LeRoy, John DeFante, all of Minneapolis, MN; sister in law, Phyllis Blake (Richard), Atlanta, GA; nieces, Charita Compton, Sharmyn Blake-Booker, both of Houston, TX, Phyllisa Blake, Atlanta, GA; six great grandchildren, other relatives, many friends, and neighbors.
