Geneva Chapman

December 6, 1933 — March 23, 2015

Geneva Chapman was born on December 6, 1933, in Hickory, Mississippi to her parents, Issac Johnson and Leatha Mae Davis. She was one of twelve children born in the family. She was raised surrounded by brothers, Ike, Charlie, James, Willie, John Willie, Willie Lee and her sisters, Anniemae, Angie, Edna, Mamie and Ruby. Growing up, Geneva was very nurturing when it came to her brothers and sisters. They remember her as kind and loving. She was a natural care giver but they also knew she would discipline them when needed. Geneva received her formal education in Hickory, Mississippi and was a 1951, graduate from Hickory High School. She furthered her education by attending the Community College of Denver, where she completed courses in nursing. In the 31st chapter of Proverbs, we find this recorded word. Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. On April 26, 1953, Geneva united in holy matrimony to Abraham B. Chapman. They first met when they both lived in Mississippi. Abraham fondly remembers their marriage as full of love and happiness. To this union, Barbara, Priscilla B., Larry, Abraham, Gwen, Gloria and Paula were born. They all remember her as mother who took great pride and joy in caring for her family. She first and for most was a woman who believed in the power of prayer and taught each one of them the importance of having the right relationship with the Lord. She was a great cook and passed those teachings to children. She also taught them the importance of having strong work ethics, being honest and always setting aside a little money for a rainy day. The family shared many happy and precious moments together. At the time of her passing, Geneva and Abraham were married 62 years. Geneva was later blessed with nine grandchildren, John, Tina, KaLelia, Germani, Dominica, Shanita, Shantavia, James, Jr. and Wylon and thirteen great grandchildren; who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They lovingly called her "grandma" and fondly remember all the family meals she prepared, the fishing trips, the family vacations in the motor home and her always being available when needed. They too have many happy and memorable moments of time spent together. By profession, Geneva was a Certified Nurse Assistant. She worked in many of the area hospitals, nursing homes and she worked as private duty aid. Geneva was hard-working, dedicated, dependable, and performed her duties with a spirit of excellence. A woman of faith who believed in the Lord, Mother Chapman was a faithful and dedicated member of Genesis Baptist Church where she served under the pastoral leadership of her son-in- law, Pastor John Brown. She served her church and the Lord as a Deaconess, Trustee, Sunday School Teacher and a member of the Choir. She had also been a member of All Nations COGIC serving under the leadership of Bishop P.H. Porter as Food Bank Coordinator and Central Baptist Church under the late Reverend W.O. Mays as a Youth Counselor. She truly enjoyed her walk with the Lord and the fellowship shared with her church family. She was one who didn't mind lending a helping hand to others. When the song writer penned the words to a familiar song; "May the Work I've Done Speak For Me;" he must have had Mother Geneva Chapman in mind. Mother Chapman was not only a strong prayer warrior; she was active in other organizations. She was a member of the Zeta Amicae An Auxiliary of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., a member of the African American Quilters Association, and the Center of African American Health. She loved working in her garden and sharing the harvest with others. In her free time, she loved fishing, bowling, quilting, cooking, and sharing with family and friends at family gatherings and family reunions. Her favorite scripture is found in Exodus 20: 1-17, "The Ten Commandments." She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this phenomenal, virtuous woman who leaves a void that can never be filled. To know Mother Chapman was to love her. Mother Geneva Chapman departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on March 23, 2015, in Aurora, Colorado. Those left to mourn her loss include her loving and devoted husband, Abraham B. Chapman, Sr. of Bennett, CO; 2 sons, Larry D. (Barbara) Chapman of Westminster, CO and Abraham B. (Denise) Chapman, Jr. of Littleton, CO; 4 daughters, Priscilla (Pastor John) Brown of Denver; Gwendolyn Chapman of Northglenn, Gloria J. Cannady and Paula D. Davis both of Denver;5 sisters, Annie M. (Joe) Moore of Newton, MS, Edna R. (Pastor Ernest) Jones, Angie M. Davis, Mamie L. Holt, all of Denver and Ruby J. Johnson of Aurora; 9 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and many friends.
