Obituary
Gary T. Hayes
Gary T. Hayes, a beloved son, brother, and friend, graced this world with his presence on May 19, 1955, in Elizabeth, New Jersey. He was the youngest of three children born to Donahue and Eleanor (Tottie) Hayes. From his early days, Gary exhibited an extraordinary curiosity and talent in the realms of chemistry and the intricate art of building model rockets, dreams that soared high above.
In 1969, the aroma of new beginnings led the Hayes family to the vibrant city of Denver, Colorado. There, Gary pursued his education, attending Merrill Middle School and proudly graduating from South High School in 1973. With a spirit of adventure and service, he enlisted in the Army in 1974, dedicating himself to the honorable task of helicopter repair before receiving an honorable discharge in 1977.
While life presented Gary with considerable challenges, particularly during his post-military years, his journey was not defined solely by struggle. He faced his battles with alcoholism and endured periods of homelessness, yet, through it all, he remained deeply connected to the values of family and love. His strength and resilience were palpable. Gary’s heart remained tender, always reaching out to his loved ones, honoring the cherished traditions of family reunion. He proudly attended the Hayes Family reunions in both 1998 and 2012, where laughter and stories intermingled with his unyielding spirit.
Gary T. Hayes will be forever remembered, his spirit soaring among the stars he once dreamed of reaching.
Gary is survived by his devoted sister, Jean Hayes Raye, of Fontana, CA, and his brother, Donahue Hayes Jr., of Denver, CO. He leaves behind a nephew, James D. Raye, along with a rich tapestry of cousins, extended family, and friends whose lives he touched.
As we reflect on his life's journey, we find solace in his poignant farewell words: “I am prepared for the sleep that has no ending. Forever and a day. For all eternity. I love you all.”
