Fredricka Kae Gatewood
December 3, 1956 – February 5, 2025
Fredricka Kae Gatewood was a witty, joyful, and resilient country girl, the only daughter of Frederick and Captola (Nevins) Gatewood. Friends and family members share a love for her smile, infectious laugh, and storytelling. While she lived in various cities throughout her life, she spent much of her later years in small towns. These rural settings reminded Fredricka of her early years in western Kansas with her grandparents, Merle and Wilmetta Nevins. She reflected fondly on country life complete with farm animals, outdoor adventures, and her pet horse.
Fredricka returned to Topeka, Kansas for her middle and high school years. At Highland Park High School, she was a multi-sport athlete who enjoyed success in basketball and track. Her high school basketball team even won a state championship. As an adult, Fredricka’s sharp wit and engaging personality served her well as a home health care nurse for the elderly. She also maintained her passion for sports as an avid fan of the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Lakers. When not watching her favorite sports, she enjoyed classic western television shows like Gunsmoke and Bonanza.
Fredricka was preceded in death by her only son, Arron R. Handy, as well as her parents and grandparents. She is survived by her two daughters, Christina Y. Fisher of Chicago, IL, and Theresa R. Gatewood of Denver, CO; one granddaughter, Varis R. Handy of Dallas, TX; along with a host of loving family members and friends.
