First Hicks

August 17, 1947 — September 25, 2014

Marilyn Ann Hicks was born to the late Rev. Alonzo Barber, Sr. and Doris Lee Barber-Fields on August 17, 1947 in Kansas City, Kansas. Marilyn received her formal education through the Kansas City, Missouri school system where she excelled in her studies. Marilyn accepted Christ at an early age at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City under the late Pastor Sinclair Thompson. She participated in Sunday School and Baptist Training Union. Upon graduation, Marilyn left Kansas City and relocated to Los Angeles, California where she met and later married the love of her life, Harold Joe Hicks. There, she was employed at the United States Postal Service. They left sunny California and moved to the Mile-High City of Denver, Colorado in the early 1970s. She was then dutifully employed at the U.S. Department of Defense Finance and Accounting Services (DFAS) and a dedicated member of the union Local 1040 for thirty-seven years where she served in various capacities including Steward and President before retiring in 2001. Serving the Lord was something that Marilyn loved to do. Her love of the Lord led her to be a faithful member of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church until her husband was called to be Pastor of New Mission Baptist Church. It was later where their spiritual journey led them to another assignment to serve as Pastor and First Lady of Mt. Carmel Community Baptist Church. Being a minister's wife and first lady was something that she did not take lightly. As a result of her commitment to Christ, she joined the International Association of Ministers' Wives and Ministers' Widows, Inc. where she served for over forty years in various capacities on the local, state and international levels. At the time of death, she was a committed partner of the House of Hope Christian Ministries, under the leadership of Pastor Richard Lewis. Her true passion was serving others. Whether it was making a peach cobbler, defending jobs with the union, lending a listening ear in times of need, or just being present, all of these qualities in her reflected the image of Christ - a SERVANT. "Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant," Matthew 20:26 NIV Marilyn A. Hicks departed this life to the heavenly father's embrace on September 25, 2014, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her husband of 49 years, Rev. Harold of Aurora, Colorado; sons – Pastor Tracy (Joan) of Topeka, Kansas and Minister Stacy (Shentella) of Denver, Colorado; daughter – Jean (Deacon Kenneth Sr.) of Denver, Colorado; grandchildren – Kenneth II, Jayana, DeAndre, Tracee, and Stacie Ann; siblings – Alonzo Barber Jr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Mark Barber of Denver, Colorado, Angelia (Ricky) Reece of Jacksonville, North Carolina, and YoLanda (Rev. Gary) Wallace of Biloxi, Mississippi; god son, Tracy L. Broussard of Phoenix, Arizona and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!
