First Harris

February 9, 1943 — March 13, 2018

Even a child is known by his deeds...Proverbs 20:11 Nancy Carolyn was born to Edward and Birdie Bush on February 9, 1943, in Rienzi, Mississippi. She was the second child and eldest daughter of five siblings. At the early age of four, Nancy was called upon to contribute to the hardworking family by helping plant, pull and pick cotton. As she grew older, she was given the responsibility of preparing the mid morning meal. She often prayed for the day to come when she could sleep in until sunrise. When she wasn’t working in the fields or in the kitchen, Nancy attended George Washington Carver Elementary school. In 1956 the family relocated to Denver, Colorado. Nancy continued her education at Gilpin, Cole Jr. High and Manual High Schools. She enjoyed studying, dressing up and playing basketball. Nancy had a mischievous side that created fun wherever she could. After being falsely accused by a cantankerous neighbor, Nancy and her friends put their farming expertise to work by digging up the neighbor’s entire front lawn! Because the obnoxious neighbor had made so many ridiculous claims before, no one believed her this time. Good times! Every wise woman buildeth her house...Proverbs 14:1 In 1960, while strolling through City Park, Nancy caught the eye of a dapper young gentleman. From inside his powder blue Chevy with the moniker, Daddy Cool , scrawled along the side, William Aaron Harris inquired, “Who’s the chick with the Buster Brown” hairdo?” He invited her out but was told he first had to meet her parents. With their approval, Nancy and Bill had their first date. They were married several months later. Around this same time, they both received Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. This was the beginning of a life of ministry. To their union was born three children, Calina Roseann, William Aaron, Jr and Sheila Marie. Nancy was a faithful wife and mother, keeping house, training her children and holding down a full time job. Over the years Nancy worked for Saint Anthony Hospital, University of Denver and Denver Public Schools. She also worked in two family enterprises, The Chicken Shack and Dr. Bill’s Barbecue. Her love for God and His people shone through in everything she did. She and her family were faithful members of Holy Trinity and Globeville Churches of God in Christ. In 1970, Gethsemane Temple was founded. True to her hardworking nature, Nancy supported the ministry in every way possible. She sacrificed time, money, and talents. She opened her home to evangelists and others in need. She gave her entire paycheck to keep the family going while the church was being built. Not once did she complain. She weathered many a storm through her unwavering faith in God. Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him... Job 13:15 A life of service takes a toll on everyone. For the past several years Nancy struggled with illnesses that rendered her weak and sometimes caused her to pass out. For as long as she could she made it to church. She loved encouraging the saints, playing with the children, singing to the Lord, learning and teaching The Word. When she was no longer able to attend, she prayed for the worship at Gethsemane as she worshipped where she was. On Wednesday, March 14, 2018, Nancy was called from Labor to Reward. She is greatly missed by all who knew her but we are comforted in knowing that her faith has become sight. She has taken a tour of her mansion in, “The Southeast Corner of Paradise!” She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Gloria (Tony) Spencer, several in-laws and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Dr. William A Harris, daughters, Calina and Sheila and son, William Jr., brothers; Earnest, Jimmy “Foxx” and Frank Bush, Vincent (Rudy) and Phyllis Robinson, Sister-in-Love Mrs. Daisy J. Harris, beloved cousins; Maxine (Bob) Gatewood, Jimmie Lee Stubbs, Birdie Patton and Anna Ferguson along with a host of nephews and nieces and great-nephews and nieces and the entire congregation of Gethsemane Trinity Temple.
