Eugene Jackson

January 7, 1931 — March 4, 2016

Eugene Jackson was born on January 7, 1931, in Waco, Texas to Mary Budrow and Adrian Jackson. He was the eldest of three boys and one girl. He had a brother Curtis Jackson, half-brother, Louis Jackson, and sister. His mother lived to be at least 102 years old and resided in Inglewood, California. Eugene attended school in Waco, Texas and had to quit high school in 11th grade to work and help support his mother. He said that he was the oldest son and that it was his responsibility to help his mother support the remainder of the family. In 1951, Eugene's family moved to Denver, Colorado. He went on to obtain his GED in 1955 and attended a Catholic Bible School. Additionally, Eugene took some classes at Regis College in Colorado. He liked school, especially history and social science. Eugene was also interested in African culture with a personal collection of books. Despite times being hard, especially for a woman trying to support her family by herself in the aftermath of the Great Depression, Eugene felt that he had a good childhood with his brothers and mother. He enjoyed riding bikes, playing outside, including stickball and kick ball. One of his favorite memories involved playing tennis in eighth grade. After Eugene's mother moved to California, he did not see her very much due to his work schedule. He worked for Denver Public Schools the majority of his life in school security and transportation. He retired from Denver Public school in September 2015 at the age of 84. In the past, he also worked in a hotel as a bus boy and finding ways to be an entrepreneur. Eugene has always been a responsible and very hard worker with a generous spirit to give to those in need. He was a member of the Cure d'Ars Catholic Church, where he sang baritone in the choir. Eugene was also a member of the Supreme General Assembly Fourth Degree, Knights of the Peter Claver and received certificate of merit for his service. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Previously, he attended Loyola Catholic Church and was also once a member of the AME church. He also was awarded a certificate as a lifetime member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Eugene read the bible every day and gave to a lot of charities. Eugene loved gospel music, jazz, and reading. He listened to gospel music every day. At one time, he even played the guitar. He liked checking out the Jazz at City Park and the Colorado Black Arts Festival. He also loved soul food. In his later days, he ate at Cora Fays almost daily and made sure he got a shave and a haircut from his barber Razor of Fridays' to be fresh for church on Sunday. Before he broke his hip, he would ride the stationary bike by his bed each evening. When it snowed he would be the first one to shovel to clear the sidewalk. He also had a special relationship with the squirrels. He would feed them bread around his car and in the grass. Eugene Jackson departed this life on March 4, 2016, in Denver, Colorado. He leaves to cherish his memory his caregivers, and friends. They will all miss the time they shared.
