On May 10, 1926, Eleanor was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Robert and Dorothy Dawson. She was the second of eleven children. Eleanor was raised in a loving family where she enjoyed participating in athletics, playing with her siblings and learning to make the best of her life. She was a devoted caregiver to her younger siblings and grew to have a life-long passion for children.
Eleanor met her first husband, Herbert Hutchinson, at a skating rink. She was drawn to his good looks and warm personality. They were married in 1947 and to this union, Herbert Jr., Victor, and Norma were born.
Later, Eleanor was persuaded to relocate to Denver, Colorado after her sister DeVera, a determined matchmaker, introduced Isaac Greer to her. Shortly after, the two married and created a loving, blended family. Rita, Kim, Rod, and Gary were raised as her own. She ensured her children knew the Lord and were baptized. At the same time, Eleanor served as a Sunday School teacher to elementary children at the Aurora Church of God for several years.
Eleanor was quite handy as a family manager. She was self-sufficient and an excellent cook. She loved attending family reunions and having picnics in the forest preserve. Eleanor had seven grandchildren that absolutely adored her. They affectionately called her Gram. She enjoyed making clothes and toys for the older girls and loved winning at arm wrestling with the boys. She liked to play board games. Her favorite game was Scrabble, and she was
undefeated at Tic-Tac-Toe. Additionally, she enjoyed watching game shows like Jeopardy, Family Feud, and Wheel of Fortune. She always had the answer.
Eleanor worked for the Federal Government as a Clerk Typist. She retired at the age of 65. In her leisure time, she enjoyed crocheting and being with family. She loved the Lord and was a willing worker in God's vineyard. Eleanor most recently served at Greater Faith Worship Center under the leadership of Pastor Hosea Cannon, Jr. She was a powerful prayer warrior. Even in her nineties, she sought the Lord and diligently prayed even in her sleep. She regularly ministered to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In her final months she would often inform her family of her readiness to be in Heaven, saying "Jesus is late!"
Preceding her in death were her parents, Robert and Dorothy (Bush) Dawson, siblings, Bernarr, Kenneth (Frances), Carl, and Stanley Dawson; husband Isaac Greer, and daughter Norma Jean Nwuso.
Eleanor Greer entered the presence of the Lord on Thursday, April 11, 2019, from Denver, Colorado. Left to cherish her memory are children Herbert. Jr. and Victor Hutchinson, Rita (George Manneh), Kim, Rod (Yolanda) and Gary Greer; siblings DeVera, Marilyn, Rodney, Donald (Carlene); and Gerald (Annette), Janet and sister-in-law Grace Dawson; grandchildren Jelani (Jocelyn) Shaw, Christopher (Kenya) Hutchinson, Tia, Enjolee', Joshua, and Jaden Greer, and LaVonne (Alan) Pettis; four great grandchildren and a host of family and friends.
