Edward Wilcox

Edward Wilcox was born on October 20, 1923, in New Orleans, Louisiana to his parents, George Wilcox and Elizabeth Williams. As a child, his uncle, George H. Wilkerson helped raise him in St. Francisville, LA and in New Orleans, LA. He was raised around his father's family. Edward being the only son was spoiled by his mother and sisters. He was known as "Man" and "Eddie", to many of his family and he was well loved. Edward received his early educational training from the New Orleans Public School Systems. On June 20, 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, he was stationed in many ports both foreign and domestic. From May 30, 1946 to April of 1947, he stationed in Germany. From March 5, 1951 to March 1, 1952, he was stationed in Japan-Korea. From April 30, 1954 to September 27, 1956, he was stationed in Japan-Okinawa. His last overseas tour was from January 13, 1957 to July 23, 1957, and he was stationed in Casablanca. During his military service, he earned numerous awards, citations and ribbons for his meritorious service; some of which include an American Campaign Medal, a World War II Victory Medal, an Army Occupational Medal, a Korean Service Medal, a United Nations Service Medal, an Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, an Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon, and a Good Conduct Medal with one Silver Loop. He served his country with honor and distinction and retired from the United States Air Force on May 31, 1964, at the rank of Technical Sergeant (E6). Edward married the love of his life, the former, Audrey Mae Clarke on October 20, 1949, in Denver, Colorado. They first met in Denver. He was the proud father of Alexander, Edward, Jr. and Kathryn. He was a man who took great pride in the care and nurture of his family. They all shared many happy and precious moments together. On April 30, 2015, after 66 years of marriage, Audrey preceded him in death. After his retirement, Edward became employed by the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center as a Supervisor. He was both respected and admired by his fellow co-workers. He was often told how much he was appreciated by the staff because he was a man who wanted to see advancement in personnel placed in his charge. He retired after many years of faithful and dedicated service. Edward was a fun loving man who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed playing card games, tinkering with household gadgets, traveling, and socializing with family and friends. He also enjoyed taking and posing for pictures. He was a man who believed in the Lord and the power of prayer. He would often hand out or send copies of the "Lord's Prayer" to family and friends or people he would meet while out and about. His favorite saying was 'Praise Our God." He didn't mind lending an listening ear to help others. He carried a jovial personality and loved playing jokes on others. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man. To know Edward was to love him. He is also preceded in death by his parents, George Wilcox and Elizabeth Williams Douglas; sisters, Alberta Conerly, Patsy Inez Howard; a son, Edward Wilcox Jr.; and granddaughter, Michelle Jones. Edward Wilcox entered into eternal rest on July 6, 2015, in Aurora, Colorado. He was 91 years old. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include 2 children, Alexander (Sandra) Wilcox Jones of Chester , Virginia and Kathryn Taylor of New Orleans, LA; 12 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; 1 brother-in-law; Alva Clarke, Jr. of Englewood , CA; 3 sister-in-laws, Bonnie Simms of Jacksonville, FL, Doris Watkins of San Diego, CA, and Cynthia Shannon of New Haven, CT, and a host of nieces, nephews; devoted Stanley Howard of Baton Rouge, LA; cousins other relatives and friends, including an adopted daughter, Irene Short-Reese of Killeen, Texas, and a devoted friend, Reginald Martin of Denver, CO.
