Dr. Robbie Lee Bean was born December 23, 1929 and quietly passed away on New Year's Day January 1, 2015. She was a resident of the Park Hill neighborhood for 54 years and was a teacher for 32 years in the Denver Public School System. She is best known for her life's work in education, civil rights, diversity and honoring of others. She received her Bachelors of Arts and Master s in Education from the University of Nebraska. She received her Doctorate in Education Curriculum from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Dr. Bean retired from Garden Place Elementary in 1992. Dr. Bean's lasting impression on Denver will be her work in the community with children and parents along with building bridges toward better race relations. Dr. Bean served as president or chairperson in various organizations and received many awards. The last award Dr. Bean received was the Trailblazer Award at the Martin Luther King Jr. Business Social Responsibility Luncheon in 2012. Her pride and joy was the establishment of Celebration of Students and Families Inc. Dr. Bean was the founder and president. The organization yearly conducted a children's creative writing and arts contest for elementary students; honored families from all walks of life and sponsored several inter-generational educational trips to South Dakota.
