He was raised alongside his sisters, Debra, Leslie, and Tracy. Dereck attended Manual High School in Denver, Colorado. He received his GED later down the line, once he moved to Roswell, New Mexico. Before moving to New Mexico, Dereck met his first daughter's mother at a high school basketball game in Omaha, Nebraska in 1980. Three years later came along Dekia Jeanine Chari Peeples, in which he called "Weebie," his first born. In the 90's, Dereck relocated to Roswell, New Mexico, where he met Venus Bustamante, who he later married on September 2, 1994.
