Dellene Farmer

September 4, 1929 — February 25, 2016

Dellene Farmer, was born in Bryan, Texas. She was the eldest and last survivor of six children born to John Ward Jr. and Vallene Rayford: James Aaron Ward, Johnnie Mae Ward, Laura Jean Small, Robert Ward, and Lovie Jewell Owens. Her father, John Ward Jr. was a devout deacon for 50 years and a dedicated Sunday school teacher for 40 years. Mrs. Vallene Ward, her mother worked in the Home Mission, sang in the choir and was an accomplished soloist with the church choir. Dellene had a beautiful and distinguished soprano voice and was a founder and original member of the Wilder Ward Singers, along with her late sister Jean Ward. The Wilder Ward Singers toured the country, for over 5 years doing numerous radio, television and live concert performances of gospel music. Dellene's church resumé includes decades of membership, contribution, and service to: Union Baptist Church, Denver, CO (Dr. John T. Walker) – Junior Mission; Vancouver Avenue 1st Baptist Church, Portland, OR (Dr. O.B. Williams) – Youth Supervisor, Choir Member, & Soloist; Chicago, IL, Antioch Baptist Church (Reverend Daniel) and Little Zion Baptist Church (Reverend Parker) – Organized Nurse's Guild and Supervised Junior Nurses; and a dedicated member of Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church (Pastor Jules E. Smith) until her passing. Many will remember Dellene's passion for life and her pride of being a nurse for 50 years. Dellene's nursing career activities included Operating Room Nurse, IV Therapist, Psychiatric Nurse, Visiting Nurse, Pediatrics Nurse, Medical & Surgical Nurse, and Private Duty Nurse with a specialization in geriatrics, Nursing Supervisor and volunteer work with the Leukemia Society of Illinois. "Nursing is a Ministry" and "Nurses are born to serve and give the gift of physical and spiritual health and well-being." Dellene lived these ideas and to her accomplishments we say "job well done". Dellene married Charles Farmer, a WWII Veteran. In her union with Alfred Nelms four children were born. She leaves her loving children: Qaasim Annoor (Winona) Dallas, TX; Sandra Ruth Nelms, Alpharetta, GA; Alva Jan Nelms, Chicago, IL; Deborah Kaye Nelms, Denver, CO.She will be missed by her loving niece, Sharon Joyce Green Cross, St.Louis, Mo, as well as her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends will never forget her will to live, and her personaland inner strength.
