Obituary Georgia’s life began in the segregated south in Coleman, Florida, on October 27, 1927. She was the seventh child born to Louis and Louvenia Perkins. Georgia and her siblings were a tightknit group that worked after school and during vacations on local farms picking fruits and vegetables and tending to the livestock. Church and school were important to the Perkins family. At the age of 11, Georgia joined Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in her hometown. The life and legacy of the woman known affectionately, as mother, Ma-Ma, Ms. Gigi, Sister Favors, and by her closest relatives as Tiny, is centered around her love for God and the people around her. Although her stature hovered around only five feet tall, she was a pillar of strength, a protector, a never-ending source of love, and a passionate believer in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She wrote that her personal mission was, “in every opportunity to lift up the name of Jesus” because of her “insatiable desire to do his will.” Her love for helping others led her to become an assistant midwife and then enlist in the U.S. Army where she became a medical and surgery technician obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Her military career took her to Landstuhl, Germany where she worked on the iron lung team. She served at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, Fitzsimons Army Hospital in Colorado, Fort Bragg in North Carolina, and Fort Ord in California. Following her honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Georgia worked as a nurse in Denver, Colorado at St. Luke’s Hospital and the VA Hospital where she was decorated with many awards for her work in the psychiatry and neurology departments. After retiring from the VA Hospital, Georgia focused on her love for children and teaching by becoming a licensed daycare director in Colorado. She completed courses in psychology and childcare management at Metropolitan State College of Denver. She was fondly known as Ms. Gigi to the children she cared for until 2006. Some of these children became much more like family to Georgia. In a step to continue her spiritual and academic growth, Georgia enrolled at the United Theology Seminary and completed her studies for a Bachelor’s of Religious Studies, a Master’s of Religious Studies, and later a Master’s of Theology. She was a founding member of Morning Star Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, while serving as a deaconess and mission advisor. Georgia always loved Sunday School. In 1992, she joined Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church Georgia where she was active in many auxiliaries. She was Co-Chair of the Deaconess Board, member of the Senior Mission, and teacher and advisor for Junior Mission. Teaching in church was one of her greatest loves and she worked to pursue this calling at every opportunity. Georgia was active in Colorado’s Salem Baptist District Association where she served as president and vice president and taught in the women’s department in the state convention of the Salem District. She was the Founder of the Salem Baptist District Association’s President’s Day celebration. Previously, Georgia was also a member other churches including St. Stephen’s Missionary Baptist, Peaceful Rest, and Mount Gilead churches in Denver. Community activities and organizations were also an important part of Georgia’s life. She was a Founding Member and President of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, Lambda Alpha Chapter; President, Matron, and Lady Knights Templar for Order of the Eastern Star; State Chaplain, Grand Matron, Assistant Supreme Matron, Supreme Council, and Supreme Lecturer of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Inc.; President of Gold Star Wives. Georgia Perkins Favors was called to be with the Lord on July 20, 2017, at 5:55 a.m. at the Cherry Creek Nursing Center while holding the hand of a kind and faithful nurse. Georgia was preceded in death by her husband George, sisters, brothers, and several nieces and nephews who were like children to her. Her memory will continue to live on and she will be forever cherished by her son Willie (Lucilla), daughter-in-law Renee, step-daughter Joyce, sister Ethel, grandsons Wade, T’Errance, and Eugene, granddaughter, Stephanie, and many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and honorary adopted children.
