Deacon Whitsel, Jr.

Deacon Sherman Henry Whitsel, Jr. was born on July 11, 1942, in Denver, Colorado to his parents, Sherman H. Whitsel, Sr. and Geraldine Grant Whitsel. He was raised surrounded by his brothers, Newton, John, Quinton and his sisters, Pauline, Cleo, Flossie, and Elanore. As a child, Sherman was very athletic. He enjoyed playing basketball and football. When Sherman was thirteen years old, he was the leader of a youth club. He was also known as a Community Activist where he was involved in seeking equality for human rights and equality in employment. He received his formal education in Denver and he graduated from Annunciation High School in 1960. On September 9, 1960, Sherman enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, Sherman was stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas and worked as a Medic. He earned a Marksmen Badge (Rifle). He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged. He continued serving in the National Guard for seven more years. By profession, Sherman was employed by the Regional Transportation Department, RTD as a Bus Driver. He was hard working, dedicated and dependable. He was respected by his co-workers and supervisors for his positive attitude and how well he worked with others. A man of faith and belief in the Lord, Sherman was a member and became an Ordained Deacon of the House of Joy Miracle Deliverance Church under the Pastoral leadership of Apostle Ralph Beechum. He truly loved his church and his pastor. When the hymnologist penned the words to a familiar song "If I can help somebody as I travel along, then my living shall not be in vein" the words accurately describe Deacon Sherman Whitsel. He has been a faithful and dedicated member for over thirty five years. On February 15, 2014, Sherman united in holy matrimony to Georgia Moore Whitsel in Denver, Colorado. The joy and happiness shared by the couple was immeasurable. They now have a large blended family of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They all shared many happy and precious moments together. Georgia fondly remembers him always bringing her flowers. Deacon Whitsel was a fun loving man who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed watching football. He was an avid Denver Bronco Fan and was happy to see them as the 2016 Super Bowl Champions. He enjoyed the time shared with his grandchildren and his daily walks to the 711 Convenience Store for his morning coffee and lottery ticket. He also loved eating at the Country Buffet with his wife and he was a man who didn't mind lending a helping hand to others. Deacon Whitsel will be remembered as a man who loved God, who loved his wife and family, who loved his church and always wanting to help others. Well Done Deacon Sherman Whitsel, Jr.; take your rest! We all loved you but God knows best. Deacon Sherman Henry Whitsel, Jr. departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on April 21, 2016, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include his loving and devoted wife, Georgia M. Whitsel of Denver; his step children, Tameka Vines of Dallas, Texas, Ebony Vines of Las Vegas, NV and Krystal Anderson of Denver, Michael L. (LaShonda) Taylor, Atlanta, GA, Reggie S. Taylor, Indianapolis, IN, Deloise Taylor, Chicago, IL, Michelle M. Moore, Tamekia L. Moore, Aisha M Moore, all of Indianapolis, IN Stacy E. (Curtis) Gregory, Los Animas; 35 step grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and many friends.
