Deacon Wattley

February 20, 1930 — July 8, 2015

Oscar Willis Wattley, III was born on February 20, 1930, in McKinney, Texas to his parents, Oscar Willis Wattley, Jr. and Virginia Rose Wilson Wattley. He was the second child born in the family. He had one brother, Jim Metz Wattley. As a child, Oscar always enjoyed riding in the big wooden wagon with his Papa. Oscar attended and graduated from Doty High School in McKinney, Texas. He furthered his education by attending Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, TX. He later earned an Associate's Degree from the Community College of Denver. On December 24, 1949, Oscar enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, he was awarded numerous medals, awards and citations for his meritorious service. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged. Oscar united in holy matrimony to the former, Arene Delores Andrews on October 14, 1951, in Sherman, Texas. To this union, two beautiful children were born, Virginia "Dee" and Oscar, IV "Bubba." In 1955, the family relocated to Denver, Colorado. In 1961, Oscar joined Central Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of the late Reverend W. O. Mays. Oscar has served his church and the Lord as Chairman of the Deacon Board; he was a true prayer warrior and a visionary who spearheaded the first building committee for the expansion of Central Baptist Church membership and sanctuary. One of his favorite scriptures can be found in 2 Thessalonians 3:16…."Now may the Lord of Peace Himself give you peace always in every way. The Lord, be with you all." Oscar was truly a man of God, who loved and honored God, his family and his friends. Deacon Wattley was the owner and operator of Wattley's Tailoring Service located in the historic Five Points community. He operated the shop for over 20 years. He has served as President of the Five Points Business Association and has worked for Nordstrom's Retail for over ten years. He loved clothes and he knew how to dress. He was a man with impeccable style, grace and class. Deacon Wattley was a fun loving man, who enjoyed life and those he encircled. He loved traveling and he has traveled from the east coast to the west coast and many points in between. He was a doting grandfather and great grandfather. They affectionately called him "Grandson, PawPaw, Grandaddy or Big O" and fondly remember all the happy and precious moments they shared together. In his free time, he enjoyed reading the Bible, watching old cowboy movies, ESPN and watching his beloved Denver Broncos. His closest friends, Leonard Dixon and Herman Carter will miss the close camaraderie they all shared together and the fact that he was a true and trusted friend. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man. To know Deacon Wattley was to love him. He is preceded in death by his wife, Arene Delores Wattley; a son, Oscar Willis Wattley, IV; his parents, Oscar and Virginia Wattley, Jr.; his brother, Jim Metz Wattley; and two nephews, Michael Andrews and Tony Wattley. "Blessed are those who die in the Lord; they may rest from their labors and their good deeds follow them." Deacon Oscar Willis Wattley, III, departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on July 8, 2015, in his home in Denver, Colorado.
