Deacon Jones

Elwood Jones, aka "Jackie Johnny Jones" was born on February 12, 1937, in Richmond, Virginia, Chesterfield County, to the union of Harvey Jones and Martha Jones. He was reared by his late mother. He was the second of four sons born in the family. As a child, Elwood was raised to love church and respect the rights of others. He received his early education in Richmond, Virginia, where he attended Hickory Hill Grade School. He attended First Union Baptist Church in Richmond, where his grandfather was the pastor. In 1948, Elwood and his mother moved to Newark, New Jersey. In 1950, he was baptized at Bethany Baptist Church. He completed his early education in the Newark Public School System. In 1955, Elwood enlisted in the United States Air Force. He was awarded numerous awards, citations and ribbons for meritorious service and duty. While serving his country, he was stationed in England AFB in Alexandria, LA. While stationed at England AFB, he met the love of his life, the former Mary L. Smith, who was an Alexandria resident. They exchanged vows on July 5, 1958, and to this union, two sons were born, Maurice O'Neal, who preceded him in death and Frank Anthony, who is now in the ministry, serving at New Life Christian Fellowship, in Greenwood Village, Colorado. Elwood served his county with honor and distinction and retired in 1975, after twenty years, at the rank of Staff Sergeant (E5) at Lowry AFB in Denver, Colorado. In 1973, Elwood and his family joined Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of the then interim pastor, Reverend F. C. Williams. On January 7, 1997, Elwood was ordained as a Deacon by Reverend P.H. Gholston. He continued to serve under the leadership of Reverend Manning Perkins the current pastor of New Life Christian Fellowship. In 1994, being led by the spirit of the Lord, Elwood moved his membership to Greater St. John Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Rodney Perry, where he continued to serve as a Deacon. He also served his church and the Lord as a member of the Usher Board. He remained a faithful and dedicated servant until his health began to fail. Elwood was also a member of the Free and Accepted Masons, Prince Hall Affiliated. He received his early masonic education and training while stationed at Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota, Rapid City, from the North Star Lodge #114. He was under the leadership of Worshipful Master, Brother Jesse Thomas. He continued his Mason duties at the Day Light Masonic Lodge #8 located in Denver, CO under W.M. Brother Howard White, until his retirement. Elwood retired from APS Security after 16 years at the rank of Lieutenant Site Supervisor. In his free time, he enjoyed reading the Holy Bible, fishing, watching television and radio tape recordings. He also loved driving across country. His personal goal in life was to be a Christian in serving the Lord his God and to witness for Him. To God Be The Glory. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John L. Jones; Russell Jones; a sister in law, Dorothy Louis Morgan- Reed. Deacon Elwood Jones departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on November 27, 2013, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include his loving and devoted wife, Mary L Jones; his son, Reverend Frank A. (Evangelist Tywanna) Jones all of Denver; his brother, Albert Reed of Newark, NJ; 5 grandchildren, Tabitha, Talitha, Tobias, Timothy, and Theophilus; his cousins, Ralph W. Taylor, Eleanor R. Taylor, Joyce V. Jackson and Shelia Jackson; his God Daughters, Shelia Dotson and Leah Mendon and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
