Darrell Johnson

On June 25, 1963, Bertha Johnson was blessed with a baby boy and she named him Darrell Lee Johnson. Born in Austin, Texas, Darrell was the third of five children. Darrell would be raised and loved by Wilmer and Izada Benson, who he referred to as Daddy and Momma. Darrell grew up surrounded by the love of his brothers and sisters, Andrea Renae’, Brain Keith, Antionette Eyvonne, Mark A., and Wilma Benson. Darrell grew up in Austin, Texas where he graduated from A.N. McCallum High School. Darrell participated briefly in the band, where he played the trombone. Darrell would later discover his real passion, the rodeo. Growing up with basketball height, Darrell would play basketball at the park, but the rodeo (riding and roping horses) was his sport of choice. Darrell’s affection for “all things country” was a part of his identity and his way of life. Dancing the two-step, listening to country western music, driving trucks, watching old westerns, especially his favorite Gun Smoke and completing his dress with a cowboy hat and boots was Darrell. Darrell’s legacy will be continued by his two sons, Tyrone Lamont Johnson and Warren Anthony Johnson. Darrell expressed his fatherly love for Lashunda Davis, Lataria Tyler and Rosa Johnson all of Austin, Texas. His grand-children are Zinnia, Davion, TyBriannia and Torry Johnson (Tyrone), Warren Jr., Gabriel, Skye and Augustine Johnson (Warren) and Anthonee, Anfernee and Anise (Lashunda). Darrell worked in security and drove freight trucks over the road for many years. Darrell’s infectious smile and laugh was endearing to all. His friends and family would refer to him as Butterball and Tex. We now refer to him as a loving father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. Darrell was preceded in death by Wilmer and Izada Benson; his grandparents, Carl and Alice Holland; and his aunt, Bobbie Louis French. Darrell Lee Johnson departed this life on July 8, 2018 in Denver, Colorado. He leaves to cherish his memory his children, Tyrone Lamont Johnson, Warren Anthony Johnson; brothers and sisters, Andrea Renae’ Robertson (Austin, Texas), Brain Keith Johnson (Denver, Colorado), Antionette Eyvonne Johnson (Austin, Texas), Mark A. Terry (Austin, Texas) and Wilma Benson Jones (Austin, Texas); his expressed fatherly love to Lashunda Davis, Lataria Tyler and Rosa Johnson all of Austin, Texas. His grand-children ae Zinnia, Davion, TyBriannia and Torry Johnson (Tyrone), Warren Jr., Gabriel, Skye and Augustine Johnson (Warren) and Anthonee, Anfernee and Anise (Lashunda). Darrell will be remembered by his nieces and nephew, Chandra Robertson, Brian Keith Johnson, Jr., Bryia Johnson, Allyson Terry and Stasia Foster; his partner, Gregory “Tyler” Grimes of Denver, Colorado and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends
