Cora May

June 4, 1923 — October 8, 2015

Cora Lee Smallwood May was born on June 4, 1923, in Frankston, Texas to her parents, Sam Smallwood and Reldie Rainey Smallwood. She was the second child born in the family. She was raised in East Texas. She received her formal education in Athens, Texas where she completed high school. She furthered her education by attending Wiley College in Marshall, Texas and she earned her Bachelors of Arts Degree from Bishop College located in Marshall, Texas. In November of 1949, she united in holy matrimony to Roy Lee May. They first met in Dallas. They eventually relocated to Denver, Colorado. They shared many happy and precious moments together. Roy preceded her in death on February 4, 1999. By profession, Cora was an Educator. She taught at Pleasant Ridge School in the Frankston Community for three years. While in the area, she was a member of the Heroines of Jericho Lodge. She was also employed by the Federal Government working at Hill Field Air Force Base in Ogden, Utah from June of 1952- December of 1955. When she relocated to Denver, Colorado in 1956, she worked for the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center until 1974. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Cora accepted the Lord as her personal savior in her youth. In 1939, she joined the Church of God in Athens, Texas. In 1956, she became a member of Campbell Chapel AME Church located in Denver, Colorado. She served her church and the Lord as a Class Leader. She served as Treasurer of the Church, the Matrons Club, worked diligently with the Food Bank and she has served as Women's Day Co-Chairman. She truly enjoyed her work with in the church and the fellowship shared with her church family. Cora will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful woman. To know Cora was to love her. Coral Lee May departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on October 8, 2015, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include two nieces, Gloria D. Smallwood of DeSoto, Texas and Callie Sanders of Whitney, Texas; her great nephew, Kevin O.(Donna) Smallwood of San Antonio, Texas; her great nieces, Jerrilyn (Devin) Parker of Sugarland, TX, Letitia R. Gipson of Norcross, GA and Dana R. (Robert) Comradd of Rockwall, TX and a host of other relatives and many friends.
