Clentontine Shannon-Sampson affectionately called "Clem" by family and friend's was born on November 22, 1927, in Woodrow, Arkansas to her parents, Dave Canaday and Jeanetter Paige Canaday. She was the youngest born in the family. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, King David, Henry and James Ivory. Being the only girl, she decided early that she didn't want to be outdone by her brothers. She made it a point to become a devout tomboy. Whatever her brothers did, she followed along whether it was fishing or hunting. She even worked alongside her father in his Blacksmith business. She fondly told the story of her father being ill and wanting rabbit for dinner. Clem retrieved a shotgun from the home; went out hunting and came home with the rabbit for her father, even though the shotgun knocked her down while firing. Clem received her formal education by graduating from the Brinkley Academy located in Cotton Plant, Arkansas. On May 26, 1980, Clem united in holy matrimony to Israel Sampson, Jr. they exchanged vows in Los Angeles, California. She had a daughter, and named her, Brenda. She was later blessed with three grandchildren, Lennett, Jeannette, and Annette who affectionately called her "Mom." They fondly remember her tucking them in at night saying, "Sleep tight don't let the bed bugs bite." They also remember her taking them fishing and making them bait their own line and they remember her being a "Diva" even before the term was as popular as it is today. She was further blessed with five great grandchildren and eleven great-great grandchildren; who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. By profession, Clem worked as a Daycare Provider for the federal government. She was a loyal and dedicated employee who was respected by her co-workers, supervisors and those placed in her charge and care. She retired after many years of faithful and dedicated service. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Clem was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. She served her church as member of the Usher Board and the Hospitality Board. She has been a member for over fifty-two years. Clem was a fun-loving woman, who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, sewing and playing billiards. She loved working in her garden and especially working in her roses. She was also a fan of shopping at the dollar store. Her closest friend, Alice Williams will miss the time they spent together and the fact that she was a true and trusted friend. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful lady. To know Clentontine was to love her.
