Charles Smith, Jr.

October 13, 1946 — February 21, 2017

Charles Manuel Smith, Jr. was born in Phoenix, Arizona on October 13, 1946 to the union of Charles Smith, Sr. and Addie Vance. He was their only child. After the passing of his parents, his beloved Aunt, Ida B. Thompson was like a mother to him. Charles graduated from Phoenix Union High School and shortly after enlisted in the United States Army where he served as an Air Borne Fire Team Leader and received an honorable discharge at the rank of Sergeant. In 1974, Charles married his first wife, Vickie "Renee" Edwards and from that union came, Charles Manuel Smith, III of Colorado and LaTecia Shanae Smith of California. In 1982, Charles met Annie Davison and after dating for four years, they were happily married in 1986. Charles added two more children, Belinda Chandler and Wendell Davison both of Colorado and they became a family. Charles "Charlie" worked in construction for over 30 years. He worked all phases of carpentry from building foundations to doing fine finish woodwork. In Denver, Charles helped build a number of major projects including the 800 Member Army Reserve campus at the south end of the Rocky Mountain Arsenal, the Wellington Webb Municipal office building, the Denver Pavilions shopping center and the Denver International Airport. "Grandpa," as the grandchildren called him, loved laughing and talking sports with the grandchildren who lived in California and cherished the times he saw them. His Colorado grandkids called him "Paw Paw." He loved watching them play outside and teaching them to ride bikes. Charles loved the Denver Broncos and was an avid fan. On most occasions when you saw him he was wearing a Broncos jersey and hat. His other hobbies were going to the tracks, family BBQ's and hanging out in Blackhawk with his wife and sister-n-law, "Rob." Charles accepted Christ at a young age; he believed in the Bible and loved God. Anytime someone would pray with him, he would say, "Good prayer, I needed that". Charles Manuel Smith, Jr. departed this life on February 21, 2017, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife: Annie Smith; sons: Charles Smith, III, Wendell Davison; daughters: LaTecia Smith and Belinda Chandler; mother-in-law: Liz Simpson; sister-in-law, Robbie Jones; 16 grandchildren: Jazmyne, Elijah, Azariah, and Jaeden of California.
