Celia Brown

October 4, 1922 — July 26, 2015

Celia Brown was born October 4, 1922, in Opelika, Alabama to her loving parents, Irving Chandler and Lenon Harvey-Chandler. Celia was the four of eleven children born to this union. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, Qualice, Wesley, John, Clemon, and Benjamin; and with her sisters, Effie, Ruthie, Geraldine, Buena, and Viola. She attended school in the Society Hill Community in Alabama. Celia met and married Thomas Brown, Sr. and to this union, four children were born, Annie, Mattie, Patricia, and Thomas, Jr. The family spent many memorable moments together. Later, Celia was blessed with 14 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and 40 great-great grandchildren. The grandchildren would lovingly call their grandmother, "Mama Celo." They remember her making the world's greatest chili and being the "Best Grandmother EVER." Mama Celo will be missed by her grandchildren. By profession, Celia worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, CNA, in the nursing homes. Her employers would call her dedicated, while co-workers would say she was committed to the excellence of the profession. Celia loved the Lord with all of her heart as she was a member of Bethlehem Church in Gary, Indiana. She was a faithful member and the church family will miss the time they would share. Celia was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Brown, Sr.; her son, Thomas Brown, Jr.; her daughters, Mattie Sease, Patricia Brown; and her parents, Irving and Lenon Chandler. Celia Brown departed this life on July 26, 2015 in Portage, Indiana. She leaves to cherish her memory and to mourn her loss, her daughter, Annie R. Bell of Denver; one sister, Geraldine Brown of Alburn, AL; 14 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and 40 great-great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
