Calvin Pope

Calvin James “Cadillac” Pope was born on May 29th,1949 in Denver, Colorado to his parents James Curtis Pope and Elvira Sarah Pope. He grew up surrounded with his brothers, Edward Charles Scott, Daniel Pope, Robert Curtis Pope and sisters, Lois Luis Grace and Gloria Marie Pope Johnson. As a child, Calvin loved to sing, travel, dressing up, and cars….hence his nickname, Cadillac. He and his friends, William “Billy” Watson, Julius Carey, and Robert Gordon would always be together singin’ up a storm.

Calvin matriculated through the Denver Public School system, graduating from Manual High School. He later attended Auraria Community College where he obtained an Associate degree in Business. Over the span of 30 years, Calvin attended and held the position of door keeper at Mt. Carmel Missionary Church and Mt. Gilead Baptist Church.  Calvin was the father to two beautiful daughters, Charlotte and Tanya and one handsome son, Michael. Later, his twenty-two grandchildren added an additional source of pride and joy to his life.

By profession Calvin sang with the Fantasy Five. He also worked as a maintenance technician with Denver Public Schools and DPL. Calvin’s love shined brighter than any of his many duties. He loved hard and deep, and he loved his family in ways they all needed. Calvin was a person who accepted everyone with open arms. He was a provider, protector, and a wonderful friend to so many. In his spare time Calvin enjoyed reading, writing, and listening to music. Calvin’s presence and smile will be greatly missed.

On Wednesday, February 16th, 2022, Calvin peacefully embraced his Lord and Savior. Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Charlotte Tuggle, Tanya Wilson, and Michael Pope; brother, Robert C. Pope; sister, Gloria Pope Johnson; 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
