Brenda Howell

June 21, 1939 — April 14, 2013

Brenda Phyetta Howell was born on Wednesday, June 21, 1939, to Lillian M. (McCloud) and Creed D. Howell in Los Angeles. Brenda later moved with her parents and her brother Gary to Denver, Colorado when she was three years old. They moved to the 2500 block of Glenarm Place and really for the last 70 years never left the neighborhood. Growing up in Denver, Brenda attended Boettcher School, Morey Junior High School and graduated from Manual High School in 1958. In school, Brenda participated in many of the club and extra-curricular activities. After high school, Brenda went to work at National Jewish Hospital as a clerk-typist. Later when an opportunity arose, she was offered an administrative position at the Western Electric Company. The company later merged to become the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). Brenda was employed with AT&T for over 25 years before retiring in the early 90's. During her time at AT&T, Brenda received many accolades and awards for her work. Growing up in Denver, Brenda participated in many of the activities sponsored by the early social clubs, such as, the Novelettes, the Syrian Temple 49 Potentate's Ball, and the Bronze Daughters of America. She was always asked to be a contestant in the Kappa Omega Chi Chapter of Alpha Chi Pi Omega Sorority of Professional Beauticians Annual Hair Style Show. She is fondly remembered for her great smile that everyone always talked about which graces many of the photographs in the family home. In the early 60's, Brenda married Floyd Morgan. The union was short-lived and following the end of her marriage Brenda devoted her time to her family, friends, travel, and her church. She was a loving daughter, sister, and aunt. She later returned to the workforce, becoming the church secretary at her church home, Zion Baptist. Her interests included family, travel, shopping and being a major fan of the Denver Broncos. She had a fantastic sense of style and you would always see her, as the old saying goes, "Dressed to the Nines". Before her illness caused her to be homebound, her adventurous spirit took her to Hawaii, Jamaica, and she loved to take cruises. Brenda transitioned on in the early morning hours on Sunday, April 14, 2013 to join her mother, Lillian, father, Creed, brother, Gary and great niece, Janah who all preceded her in death. We know the Howell's are enjoying being together as a family again. Brenda is survived by nieces, Veshelle T. Howell, Katrisha L. (Robert Perkowski) Howell, Gianna "GiGi" (Shawn) Swafford, great nephews, William C. Howell-Perkowski, Matthew C. Tucker, Jaiden M. Swafford, niece, Tatianna J. Swafford, aunt, Marcella Buck, cousins, Lillian and Kay Crawford, Johnny Taylor, Sister in Law, Janice M. (Robert) Cornell, devoted caregiver, Sherri Thornton, friend, Karen Perkins, her Zion Baptist church family and many other family and friends.
