Blanche M. Gaines was born on September 8, 1923, the third child of Robert and Lucy Nelson in St. Louis, Missouri. She was raised with two sisters, Henrietta and Lucille; and one brother, Robert. She attended and graduated from Sumner High School in June, 1943. She was a charter member of Westside Missionary Baptist Church. She faithfully sang in the choir and taught Sunday School until health challenges made it difficult. Blanche was employed by St. Luke's Medical Center starting as a Telephone Operator and concluding her career as the Head Supervisor of Housekeeping. She retired after working at St. Luke's for over 40 years. She was hard working and diligent in her duties and responsibilities. At work and at home, Blanche kept everything immaculate. After retirement, she worked for a Geriatric Center as a Healthcare Liaison, contacting clients during "wellness calls" ensuring all was well for them during the night. Her attention to detail extended to her personal sense of style. She is remembered for always being fashionably dressed. One of her favorite pastimes was shopping. She was an avid reader and enjoyed autobiographies and fashion magazines. She enjoyed detective television shows and helped Perry Mason, Mattock and Walker, Texas Ranger solve their cases. Although Blanche was a very private person, she loved her family and friends, and always looked out for her nieces and nephew, Styleszetta, Douglas and Deborah. She was a very elegant and independent person who took care of herself for ninety-one years until her health began to fail. Her niece, Ruby, and great niece, Patrice, took excellent care of her until she moved to Denver, Colorado in 2014. She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lucy Nelson; her sisters, Henrietta and Lucille; and her brother, Robert. Our family celebrates the amazing life that Blanche lived. Everyone who knew her were blessed by her smile, and gratitude for any and everything you would do for her. On Thanksgiving Day, November 24, 2016, after she fought a good fight, having finished the race, kept the faith, she is now embracing the Lord's exceedingly great reward in Heaven. Those left to cherish her memory include nieces, Styleszetta Shaver, Denver, Colorado, Ruby Nelson of Wildwood, Missouri, and Darphine Seay of Tampa, Florida; great- nieces, Patrice "Tricey" Gilkey (Bernard) Chesterfield, Missouri, Jennifer and Kelsey Seay, of Tampa, Florida; great-great nephews, Jaelen and Caeven Gilkey Chesterfield, Missouri; great-great niece, Emory Seay of Tampa, Florida; and a cousin, Helen England of St. Louis, Missouri, as well as many other relatives and friends. "Let gratitude be the pillow upon which you kneel to say your nightly prayer."
