The Life and Legacy of
Betty Jean Matthews Garcia
Betty Jean Matthews was born on October 26, 1930, in Kansas City, Missouri, to the parents, Thomas Matthews and Gertie Suggs-Matthews. She was one of three children born to this union. After the passing of her mother, years later, Thomas was re-married and the family grew embracing Donald, Melvin, Vivian, James, Suzette, Geneva, and six other siblings that preceded her in death. Betty was a loving and caring young woman who loved helping others.
As a young adult, Betty married Clarence Jennings. To this union, seven children were born. This marriage was dissolved. Later, Betty married Jerry Mitchell Garcia, to this union, one child was born. She loved her children and kept an open door to all extended family and friends. She was always willing to help those in need; she loved people.
Betty attended cosmetology school in Kansas and was a successful Beautician for many years. Later, she owned and operated her own daycare, where she served youth, children, and elderly persons. Her love was never to short to reach everyone she intended to affect.
Betty was a woman of faith. She was a faithful member of Peaceful Rest Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor Charles Survine. She sang in the choir and was committed to the ministry.
She enjoyed sewing, baking, and making jewelry. Everybody loved her dinner rolls, and her potatoes rolls. Knowing Betty was a true blessing for all.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome Mitchell Garcia; her children, Sandra Marcella Jennings, Corrine Elizabeth Jennings, Theresa Maxine Jennings-Craddock, Ronald Matthew, Eugene Jennings, Darrell Christopher Jennings (homegoing, August 24, 2019); and six of her siblings.
Betty Jean Garcia departed this life in the hand of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on August 27, 2019, in Denver, Colorado. She leaves to share memories her children, Louella Irene Alebiosu, George Robert Jennings, Denise Louise Dubose, Jeri Michelle Garcia-Griffith; and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, Peaceful Rest Church members, and friends.
