Bessie Scott

Bessie Ellen Scott's life's journey began in Norfolk, Virginia on December 31, 1944. She was the Fourth child born to Her parents, the late John H. Lewis and the late Ruth Lewis. Her siblings, Jimmy Slade, Noah Lewis, and Joyce Batch cannot help but remember as a young child how Bessie would brighten up the room with her bubbly personality and rambunctious demeanor. Truly an "Social Butterfly" was born.

Being the child of a military service member, Bessie was afforded the ability to view the world in places throughout the United States and abroad. Germany being one of her greatest memories.
Bessie attended and graduated from Fort Knox High School and continued to the University of Louisville. Her formal education was completed in Philadelphia, PA, where she pursued a career as a nursing assistant which, led to several Home Health Care assignments.

Motherhood shortly followed as Bessie gave birth to her oldest son Herbert Jr. on February 1, 1967. Two and a half years later, Bessie gave birth to twins, Antoinette and Anthony, on December 13, 1969. From these blessings bestowed upon her life, she gained, 20 precious grandchildren and 5 adorable great-grandchildren. She was a mother who was devoted to her children and grandchildren, loving them all unconditionally. Nothing brought her more joy, than to be surrounded by her family.

Over the course of Bessie's life there were several things that she loved to do. Listening to music, playing cards, and dancing are some of her favorite pastimes, but topping the list would be, "Family Gatherings". Family gatherings meant a lot to Bessie. With her unique ability to socialize with people and having them over, made all the efforts of cooking worthwhile and brought a smile to her heart. Bessie would make her rounds during the festivities talking to the kids and giving them the "Life lessons" and "Expectations" talks and finish it with; "Grandma Bessie Loves You" and hug and a kisses.

A favorite response that many remember hearing Bessie say, if you called her on the phone and asked, "What are you doing?" would be, "Sitting on the side of the bed". Bessie also had a love for elephants. She collected many different types. Her collection is made up of many different stones, woods and metals. She even has some elephants made like candles that many people gave her and she cherished so much. One important factor though, regarding her elephants was that, the trunk of the elephant always had to be in the "Up" position because this meant to her a sign of," Good luck".

Watching "Westerns", "Crime Dramas", and her "Have and Have-nots" programs were something she liked to do when she was at home relaxing. She got a kick out of watching the "Maury" show and trying to figure out from the start of the program if, "He was the baby's daddy".

Bessie had a sense of humor that kept you laughing and had the ability to turn a frown upside down just by telling one of her funny stories or reenacting a moment that would make you giggle for days. She was a good listener. She had an genuine concern and compassion and could provide encouragement that you would value and respect for a lifetime. "Selfish" is a description that could never be used when describing Bessie. She would give you the shirt off her back and her last dollar if you needed it.

Bessie's most recent job as a "Guest Relations" professional at the Denver Athletic Club allowed her to put her "Social Charm" and outgoing demeanor to work. She warmed the hearts and forged long lasting friendships with the clientele and staff that spanned over the 15 years that she was employed there and beyond. Everyone that know Bessie had a genuine "Love" for Her. To know Bessie was to truly love Bessie, She will be dearly missed!

Bessie is preceded in death by her parents, John Lewis and Ruth Lewis, and sister Joyce Batch.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her companion of 23 years, Richard Sanders, her three children Herbert Jr. (Sasheen) Scott of Denver., a daughter, Antoinette (Anthony) Preston of Ohio, her son Anthony (Nicole) Scott; 20 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren., two brothers Jimmy (Barbara)Slade and Noah(the late Mary)Lewis of, one cousin Mary(the late Paul)Jackson; a host of nephews; and a host of nieces; beloved friends from the DAC and many other friends.
