Benjamin Cockerham, Jr. was born on December 26, 1942, in Smithton, Arkansas to his parents, Benjamin Cockerham, Sr.and Mae Ella Howard Cockerham. He was the first born in the family. He was raised surrounded by his sisters, Dora
and Diniece. His siblings remember him playing baseball for the Castor Team where he was quite a pitcher. He involved both his sisters during his home practices. Diniece was bat catcher and Dora collected the missed balls. During high school, Benjamin earned several certificates while in Woodshop for his skills in Carpentry. His Instructor, surrounding area. He also worked on several homes in the community. In 1961, he graduated from Southside High School in Ringgold, Lousiana. He furthered his education by attending Grambling State University in Grambling, LA.
On March 9, 1964, Benjamin enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, he earned a Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, an Expert (Rifle) Driver and Mechanic Badge. He was stationed in Franfurt, Germany. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged. A man of faith and belief in the Lord, Benjamin accepted the Lord as his personal savior at an early age and joined the New Friendship Baptist Church in Castor, LA, where he played the piano for the church choir.
Benjamin was a fun-loving man, who enjoyed life and those he encircled. In his free time, he enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos, the Denver Nuggets, and listening to soft jazz. His closest friends, Rev. John Nash, LD & LC Cox, Joe Freeman Williams, and Clarence Cox will miss the camaraderie's they all shared together and the fact that he was a true and trusted friend. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man.
To know Benjamin was to love him.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and a niece.
Benjamin Cockerham, Jr. departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on July 21, 2019, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include 2 sisters, Diniece (Johnnie) Dixon Chapman and Dora L. Snyder all of Denver, Colorado; 2 brothers, Jonathan (Cindy) Cockerham of San Antonio, Texas and Deacon Carlos (S'ere) Cockerham of Shreveport, LA; a sister-in-law, Mattie Cockerham of Oak Grove, LA, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
