Asaline Hughley

October 13, 1943 — February 17, 2023

Denver, CO

The sun rose upon the life of Asaline Demart Hughley on October 13, 1943. She was born to her parents, Geneva and Silkirk Harris in Angleton, Texas and was raised with her siblings, Donald and Everlina.

Asaline grew up in Texas and was educated through Angleton Independent School District. She attended and graduated from Marshall High School in 1961. Asaline was passionate about working with children and therefore decided to pursue higher education at Prairie View A&M University. She worked hard and diligently to earn her master’s degree in Elementary Education. She would go on to have a very successful career in Elementary Education working for Denver Public Schools. She was honored to become the Assistant Principal at John Amesse Elementary School before later retiring. She was committed to the purpose; no child would be left behind and went beyond expectation to ensure that this was accomplished.

Asaline moved to Denver, Colorado for additional life opportunities. Here, she would met a young man named Wayne Cochran. They were married on February 16, 1978. This marriage was later dissolved. She later met the love of her life, James “Jim” Hughley and the couple began as friends.  They were later joined in Holy Matrimony on March 18, 1980, at Friend Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were blessed to spend 43 years together. Asaline and Jim were inseparable, they spent every moment they possibly could together, helping each other become the best people they possibly could.

She was a devout woman of faith, who knew that her help and strength came from the Lord. She was a member of Spottswood A.M.E. Zion Church for more than 40 years, where she served as the Missionary Society President for 8 years. She also served as the Women’s Day Chairperson and Bible Study Teacher for a duration of time. In every position that she served, she did so with a spirit of excellence.

Asaline developed many relationships through the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, most notably Reta Murray, Virginia Payne, Shirley Broaden, Rev. Willene Collins and Woller Wooten. In unity, they all served God’s purpose, despite any opposition they may have faced. Those who knew her best would conquer that she was dedicated to her ministry, her husband, and her family.

Asaline became a member of the elite Denver Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc in 1982. She served in several capacities over the duration of her membership.

To know Asaline was to love her, she was the most genuine and humble woman you would ever meet. She would take the shirt off of her back for anyone in need and would make sacrifices with a leap of faith. Words are inadequate of describing this wonderful woman, but it goes without saying “Well Done Thy Good and Faithful Servant”.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Geneva and Silkirk Harris, and her brother, Donald.

The sun set upon the life of Asaline Demart Hughley on February 17, 2023. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, James “Jim” Hughley; sister, Everlina; stepson, Elder Delford Hughley, many additional family members and friends.
