Alice Marie McGaughy was born on September 24, 1960, to her parents, Ralph Smith and Valerie Castro in Alamogordo, New Mexico. She was the second child born in the family. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, Raymond, Steve, Tommy, Carlos, Mikey, Bobby and her sister, Virginia. As a child, she loved camping and fishing. Her siblings fondly remember her being the first to go down the river for river water falls. She was never afraid and embraced it as a challenge. Alice received her early education by graduating from Alamogordo High School. She met Charles McGaughy while working in a diner in Memphis, Tennessee. To this union, Angeleke, Charlene, Jessica and Sonya, were born. They fondly remember fishing together, having family bar b ques and just enjoying each other's company whether at birthday celebrations or other family activities. Alice later met Charles "AL" Alford while at a social gathering. They enjoyed the visits to Black Hawk and spending quality time together. Alice was later blessed with six grandchildren, Samya, Keion, Sincere, Sharmar, Orianna and Pharelle, who all were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They lovingly called her "Grammy or Grams" and fondly remember her waking them up with snow balls in their clothes and she taking them to get ice cream after school. By profession, Alice was employed as a Teacher's Aide for the Head Start Program and she volunteered for several originations. She is remembered as being hard-working and having a jovial personality. Alice was fun loving woman, who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed spending quality time with her grandchildren and playing pity pat with her neighbors. Her closest friends, Veronica and Delores will miss the camaraderie's they all shared together and the fact that she was a true and genuine friend. She was a loving and caring person with a beautiful heart and soul. She was a person who didn't mind lending a helping hand to others. She leaves a void that can never be filled. To know Alice was to love her. Alice Marie McGaughy departed this life on August 17, 2016, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her four daughters, Angeleke D. (Branden) Harris, Charlene V. (Michael) Key, Jessica D. (Eric) Terry and Sonya R. McGaughy all of Denver; her mother, Valerie Castro of Alamogordo, NM; her step children, Kimberly McGaughy, Denver, Beverly McGaughy, Aurora, Sylvia McGaughy, Denver, Carmen McGaughy, Marquita L. (Lon) Cooper, Chara (Troy) Harris all Aurora, Ataska M. (Jack) Evans and Charles E. McGaughy all of Memphis, TN; 6 brothers, Raymond Smith, Denver, Steve K. Smith, Las Cruces, NM, Tommy A. (Sherry) Smith, Wichita, KS, Carlos L. Smith, Alamogordo, NM, Mike P. (Stacey) Smith, Mescalero, NM and Bobby Hernandez, Alamogordo, NM; 1 sister, Virginia (Hosea) Molina, Wichita, KS; 6 grandchildren; 34 step grandchildren; 44 step great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
