Alice Lynnette Herndon was born on September 26, 1969 in Denver, Colorado to proud parents, Horace and Leah Herndon. Welcoming her to the family were sisters, Nancy Kaye and Darla and brothers, Alfred "Bo" and Alex. Alice was named after two powerful family matriarchs, great aunt Alice Warrior and aunt, Alice Bartlett.; two strong women of God. As the baby of the family, she was her daddy's little princess. She was adored and doted over by her parents and older siblings. Each one of her brothers and sisters had a very special relationship with her, always trying to care and protect her. Little Alice loved purses and her sister Darla remembers she always had one slung over her shoulder and even as an adult she had a closet full of purses. She also grew up with a love for the Lord and church. At a very young age she attended and was baptized at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church. She started singing with the youth group "Voices of Joy". They traveled to many cities spreading the gospel in song. One of her favorite songs to lead was "Goin Up Yonder". Even though she loved to sing she was very shy and always had to be coaxed or have her sister Darla join her. She was a faithful and beloved member of Paradise Missionary Baptist Church, where she was lifted in prayer every week. She put her faith in the power of prayer. Alice was educated in the Denver Public Schools and was a proud graduate of Montbello High School. A very detail-oriented and smart young woman, Alice was employed as an Administrative Assistant, working with the City & County of Denver, Wayne Vaden Law Firm and Little Saints Daycare and Learning Center, which was owned by her mother, under the auspices of Loving Saints Christian Fellowship. She was always reliable and hard-working. Even when not at work, she could be found working from home on projects to make sure the job was done and done right! No matter how sick she was she always took care of business. The light of Alice's life were her children; Rashad, Sierra, Diamond and Jade. Her children remember how independent and hard-working their mother was; she always made sure they were well-cared for and had everything they needed. Her daughter said, "She always made a way out of no way". Later her grandchildren, Si`Ana, Ari`Ana and Jamyus brought her more joy than she could have imaged. They fondly called her "MoMo". She loved singing "You Are My Sunshine" to them and watching cartoons and dancing with them. Alice loved gold jewelry and nice clothes, which she would have to hide from her daughters. She would tell her girls "she couldn't have anything to herself", because they were always confiscating her stuff. She also filled her house with plants and fine furnishings. Alice always had style and pizazz! The baby of the family, Alice was always the smallest and the fiercest. She never backed down from a fight, even the fight of her life, cancer. Diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer three years ago, she fought long and hard. Her doctors and nurses were in awe of her strength and stamina. Even up to her last hours her mind was sharp and clear as she was passing out advice and managing the payment of her bills. Darla and Alice's favorite greeting to each other was, "You still holding on baby? Well keep on keeping on." Her family was there by her side to support and care for her throughout her treatments and set-backs. After her initial diagnosis her brother Bo, brought home Cooper, a Jack Russell Terrier to keep her company on her cancer journey. Cooper would always greet her home after a long day of treatments with a hug. One of Alice's few requests for her homegoing was that Cooper be there in a tux. Her BFFs were Dionne, Dionna "Dee Dee" and Rhonda. They will remember her for the love and great times they shared. Alice was nicknamed "Apple" by her adopted Dad, Leonard "Smitty" Smith Sr. Apple became her signature brand and red, her favorite color. She decked her entire kitchen out in everything red apples! Even her license plate said "My Apple". This precious jewel truly was the Apple of God's Eye. As her mother sang, "Walk With Me Lord" Alice quietly slipped away. She departed and returned to the Lord on Saturday, August 27, 2016 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Alice is preceded in death by her father, Horace Herndon, Sr. and her best buddy brother, Alex, and her brothers, Horace David, and Horace, Jr. Left to cherish her memory and celebrate her life is her loving and devoted family, her children son, Rashad Brunson, daughters, Sierra (Andre) Herndon, Diamond Smith and Jade Smith; grandchildren Si`Ana Carter, Ari`Ana Carter and Jamyus Knighten; mother, Leah Gilmer; sisters, Nancy (Kendell) Hogue, Darla Herndon, brother Alfred "Bo" Wright, all of Denver, Co.; brothers, Ellis "Rusty" Herndon, Oklahoma City, OK; Stanley Herndon, Wichita, KS, sisters, Marilyn (Roy)Herndon-Dumas, Long Beach, CA., Rhonda Herndon-Carter, Amarillio, TX ; uncle, Bobby (JoAnn) Carter, aunts, Alice Bartlett, Faye (Murl) Anderson and Margie Walker all of Wichita, KS., aunt, Maye (Robert) Johnson, Grady Arkansas; adopted son, Terran Watkins, step-daughter Darsharee Farrow and god-children, Jaydien Herndon and Leilani Hayes and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
