Agatha Lewis

Agatha Marie Lewis, daughter of the late, Harry Sams and Louise Campbell-Sams, was born on November 26, 1940, in Meridian Georgia. She was the third oldest child of four siblings. As a child she enjoyed reading, writing, playing with friends and going to church.

Agatha received her early education in the McIntosh County school district at Todd Grant elementary and secondary schools graduating top of her class in 1959. She was well respected among her classmates and was considered one of the best basketball players at the school.

After high school, she moved to Norfolk, Virginia and attended Norfolk State College, where she earned her 4 -year degree in Education and became a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. She was driven and wanted to impact children across the country. She traveled to Okinawa, Japan and taught elementary students from 1965 to 1970.

While teaching overseas, she met the love of her life, Billy D. Lewis. They met while Billy while on tour in Vietnam and dated for a short time before they decided to get married in 1971, secretly. After their union, they both moved to Colorado Springs to start their new life together and was married for nearly 30 years. With this union, one son was born, Michael D. Lewis, in 1972.

While living in Colorado Springs, she continued to make a meaningful impact in the lives of children and worked as a school teacher for School District 11 (several years) before her early retirement. She attended Peoples United Methodist Church, Colorado Springs for more than 40 years as a devoted member.

Agatha was a devoted mother and grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her son, close family, and friends. She loved to spend her nights, talking on the phone for hours with close friends, Tina Bailey, Lela Kolheim and many other loved friends. In her spare time, she enjoyed making crafts for church events, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

Agatha Lewis, 78, passed away peacefully, Thursday, December 27, 2018, at New Dawn Memory Care Center in Aurora, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy D. Lewis, September 22, 2000. She is survived by her son. Michael Lewis (LaShona); grandsons, Michael, Jr. and Jordin; loving sister, Eloise Daniels, Norfolk, Virginia; nephew and nieces, Lee Sullivan (Angela) Indiana, Teresa Young (John), Georgia, Lindell Sullivan, Texas, Ronnie Sullivan, Texas; adopted sons, Parren Porter, Georgia, Tommie Jones, Colorado Springs; devoted friends, Tina Bailey, Karotal Small, Odessa Johnson, Mary Edmonson, Joanne Howard and countless other family and friends.
