Abraham Lister

April 25, 1937 — June 30, 2015

On April 25, 1937, almost eight decades ago, God's ever watchful eyes scanned the universe looking for a home to place a beautiful baby boy. His all-knowing eyes fell on a devout Christian couple, Mora, and Emily Lister of Shreveport, Louisiana, who became the birth parents of Abraham. Abraham began his education with home schooling and continued at Philadelphia Seventh-day Adventist Church School in Shreveport. Abe was a self-made man. He recently expressed to his brother, Robert, his regret of not following his father's vision for him to go to Oakwood University and become a preacher. However, the school of experience prepared him for the many challenges he faced and the opportunities he embraced during his sojourn on earth. He was industrious, thrifty, and talented. At an early age he gave his heart to the Lord and was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He enjoyed being in the Pathfinder Club, the MV (AY Society) and was a top salesperson for the Message Magazine as a young literature evangelist. Abe's favorite song was "When The Roll Is Called Up Yonder". His favorite Bible Verse was John 3: 16. Like George Washington Carver, he knew the taste and appreciation of peanuts. Like biblical Esau and Nimrod he had the fever of a hunter. He loved to explore. He loved art. He was a painter, gardener and he enjoyed fishing. He enjoyed coining words, phrases and sentences. He loved to talk although he never owned or wanted a phone. He could hold long conversations on current events and other topics of interest using a stranger's phone. A lot of young men like to travel and have a desire to roam in their blood. Abe was not an exception to this free-spirited trait. From about the age of 17-35, he traveled and lived in various parts of the US, Canada, Europe and the West indies. During this period he did not keep in touch as frequently as his family would have liked. After that period of time he has kept in close contact with his family, often spending extended holidays with his siblings, parents and other relatives. Abraham was a natural comedian and we will always treasure some of his running jokes. On June 30, 2015, Abraham answered the call of his Maker. He died the way he lived – persistent, rugged, beating the odds every step of the way. For two weeks his physicians almost daily said he would not live through the night. He defied medical science and left his care-givers baffled with his atypical death. His parents Mora and Emily Lister preceded him in death. He leaves 4 sisters – Mervetta, Pennie (Ted), Earlene (Raymond) and Margaret and 1 brother – Robert (Connie) 5 nephews – Raymond, Xavier (Marceline), Randall (Clara), Zephon (Crystal), Martin (Chavvah), 3 nieces – Sandia (Raymond), RaShaye, Rolanda (Goly), 8 great nephews and 4 great nieces, and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
