Wayne Carter, Jr. was born on September 2, 1960, in New Orleans, Louisiana to his parents, Wayne Carter, Sr. and Patricia A. Morrison Carter. He was raised surrounded by his brother, Bryan and his sisters, Penny and Cathy. His Christian faith began in New Orleans, where he worshiped as a Catholic. The family eventually relocated to Colorado Springs, Colorado, and he became Baptist. He joined Macedonia Baptist Church in Denver and served faithfully for a number of years. Wayne also enjoyed visiting several other churches in the metropolitan area. Wayne graduated from Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs. He furthered his education by attending the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, 1985. Wayne has always enjoyed athletics. While in college, he was a stellar athlete. He smashed all existing track records in the Long Jump and the Triple Jump. He became an "All Time" medal winner at UNC. His talent earned him a spot in the 1986 Olympic Trials, where he was able to compete against the World's best athletes. He was always proud of that accomplishment and often shared the story with his students. On June 1, 1985, Wayne united in holy matrimony to the former Cheryl G. Williams. They first met while in college at UNC. They exchanged vows at Macedonia Baptist Church officiated by the late Reverend John B. Morris. To this union, two beautiful children, Whitney Denease and William Leotis were born. They remember him as a loving and devoted father; whose pride and joy was the care and nurture of his family. He was later blessed with a granddaughter, named Crystal, who was an additional source of joy and pride in his life. The family shared many happy and precious moments together. By profession, Wayne was employed as an Educator and Multi Sport Coach for the Denver Public Schools. During his tenure, he earned countless awards and received numerous accolades for his service and ability. He was named Teacher of the Year, Coach of the Year; he coached some of the best Track Athletes in the State of Colorado, he was hailed as a Coach serving during the period often termed as the "Montbello Track Dynasty;" where many of the area successful athletes and coaches were produced. Wayne last served as Physical Education Instructor and Coach at Lake Middle School in Denver. He loved being part of the staff and working with all his students. His knowledge, care and understanding was essential to the schools overall excellence and success in teaching achievement. Wayne retired in 2012, after serving the district for over 27 years. Wayne was a man who will be remembered for his kindness and compassion. He was a loving father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, and nephew. He was an exceptional Educator, a brilliant Coach and devoted Friend. He leaves a legacy of love, laughter and a void that can never be filled. Many lives have been made better for crossing paths with Coach Wayne Carter, Jr. Wayne Carter, Jr. departed this life on his birthday, September 2, 2014, in Aurora, Colorado. Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss include, his children, Whitney D. Carter and William L. Carter; his granddaughter, Crystal N. Castleberry; his former wife, Cheryl G. Williams Carter all of Aurora; two brothers, Bryan Carter, Aurora and Terrell Francise, Houston; two sisters, Penny DeNoble, Denver and Cathy Carter, Houston, Texas and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other relatives and many friends.
