Vera Greer

The sun rose for Vera Scrivens Greer on October 9, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she was born to Wilbert Scrivens and Vera Jackson Scrivens. At a very young age, the family moved to Charleston, West Virginia. Throughout her life, Vera developed enduring friendships beginning at a young age because of her warm heart and engaging spirit. The neighborhood and Boyd Elementary School were the places where she began lifelong friendships with friend/sisters Brenda Turner Means and Gloria Fuller Patterson. Charleston High School in Charleston, West Virginia prompted Vera's career goal to become an educator. Being an organized and goal oriented person, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia State College (now University). After graduating from WV State, Vera moved to New Jersey with some of her college friends and began her teaching career at New Jersey Job Corps. Vera joined Simpson Methodist Church in Charleston and was informally adopted into the family of Blanche and Rev. B. Milton Hargrove after the passing of Vera's parents. When Blanche Hargrove moved to Baltimore, Maryland, Vera returned often to visit her 'mother of heart' and also visit Blanche's granddaughter, Alexandria Nicole, who is also Vera's godchild. In 1974, Vera moved to Denver, CO at about the same time as her friend Gloria decided to head west. Vera worked with the Aurora Public Schools from 2/13/1976 to 6/29/2004. Vera's taught social studies at Aurora Central and William Smith High Schools. Teaching was a passion for Vera. It mattered not that she was in church, a grocery store or a theater, students went up to her and hugged her, thanking her for being a part of their lives. A person, who was strong in her convictions, and true to themselves and others, need not raise their voice to command attention for people to notice their presence. Vera was a founding force for the Young Parenting Program where she worked with at risk girls, pregnant or with small babies. The goal was to keep them in school and learn how to take care of themselves and their children. She received accolades and recognition for her dedication and service to her school and community. Vera met Harry through mutual friends in 1993 and have been together ever since. They took the plunge to husband and wife, August 4, 2003. Vera was the all-time shopping queen! If there was a sale, she could sniff out designer clothes at unbelievable prices and her wardrobe is evidence of fashion prowess. What may not be known is her love of perfume! The clerks at Nordstrom's and Neiman Marcus knew her by name as she was able to identify perfumes by bottle and sniff. Vera also held an eye for jewelry. She was able to identify the value stones, distinguishing purity, and clarity. All who shopped with Vera were in for the long haul that day, ending with dinner and feet up when returning home. However, when Vera retired from work, you were not to bother her between 11:00 am and 1:00 pm so she could watch her stories. Nap-time continued between 5 and 6 pm even after she retired. Vera's impact on others will be felt in future generations because she lovingly served her students, friends and family with her down to earth goodness, compassion and unerring kindness and love. Vera Scrivens Green departed this life on July 20, 2014, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include, her husband, Harry M. Greer III, of Denver; her Godchild, Alexandra Nicole Johnson; informally adopted brothers and sister, Beverly Hargrove, III, John Hargrove, Gayle Hargrove; other special children, Audra Eakins, Ryan Eakins; cousins, sister/friends, friends, students, teachers and people who remember her for the beautiful person called Vera.
