Herman Humphries

Herman Humphries was born on July 9, 1942 to Mary Bell and Eugene Humphrey’s in Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was one of five children born to this this union and was raised with his siblings, Henry, Ben, Eugene Jr., and Mary Bell “Baby Sister”.

Herman was raised in Mississippi and later enlisted in the Army/ Navy. He served his country proudly. After being honorable discharged from the military, Herman relocated to Denver, Colorado for additional opportunities. Here, he would meet a wonderful young lady named Shirley Humphries, they were joined in holy matrimony on July 13, 1974 by the late Rev. Dr. Wendell T. Liggins. Of this union, he was blessed with the addition of Reggie, Sharon, Shelia, Sharmaine and Shondalyn. One of the couple’s fondest memories included going to family reunions together, taking the kids to Disney Land, reading, taking grandkids on “The Bumpy Road”, driving out of state on a whelm, and study the bible, traveling to track meets.

Herman worked as a switchman/ brakeman for the railroad for more than 20 years. After retiring from the railroad, he worked for several years on tram’s and as a carrier driver for The Parking Spot. He did everything with a spirit of excellence.

Following his retirement he took classes at Auraria Community College and Emily Griffith Community College.

To know Herman, was to love him, he provided for everyone and was a joy to be around. He was a wealth of knowledge who would share with anyone that was willing to listen. During his free time, he enjoyed watching sports, cheering on football teams (not the Denver Broncos), he started out as a Bronco fan and later cheered on everyone except for the Broncos. He enjoyed traveling, hanging out with his friends, Cliff Young, George Smith, Israel Dawson, Willie Mayfield and Walter; and most importantly, spending time with his family. He would gain an additional source of pride and joy with the addition of his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. To them, he was affectionately known as “Papa”.

Herman was involved with several organizations including the Bronco Booster Club and American Legion Post 29. A man of faith, Herman devoted his time as a sunday school teacher. He served on the deacon board as chairman and even sang in the men’s choir. Needless to say, this man made a difference.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Mary Bell and Eugene Humphrey’s; brothers, Henry (Katherine) Manidere, Eugene (Rose) Humphries jr., Benjamin (Shirley) Humphries and William Humphries.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Shirley Humphries; sister, Mary Bell Humphrey; daughters, Shovaugn, Shelly (Yancey), Sharon (Rev. D.K. Crockham, Sharmaine (Greg) Norman-Curry, and Shondalyn (Calvin Ray) Coley; son, Reggie Norman; grandchildren, Sheldon, Shanee, Little Reggie, Ray, Stephanie, Michael, Nikki and Adam; great grandchildren, Mastr and Cayden McConnell, Brooklyn and Harlem Coley, Cardon, Taire, Carleya, and Taires Armstrong, Cardaie Kelly,  and Carjohn McMulty, and many friends.
