Emma Dell Bailey was born on December 21, 1937, in Denton, Texas; to her parents, Eddie Beard and Sirdelle Johnson Beard. She was the first child born in the family. She was raised surrounded by her brothers, Edward, Jr., Charles and her sisters, Gloria, Ruth and Joe Ann. As a child, she loved singing and was a member of the Elks Drill Team. She is remembered for having long pony tails and her brother, Edward, Jr. pulling on them. They also remember her standing her ground and fighting when necessary. Emma received her formal education in Denver, Colorado, where she attended Whittier Elementary, Cole Jr. High School and she graduated from Manual High School in 1955. Shortly after graduation, Emma united in holy matrimony to King Lawson on August 3, 1955. He was serving in the military. To this union, one daughter, Barbara Ann was born. The family relocated to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. This marriage was later dissolved in 1964, Emma and Barbara relocated back to Colorado. Barbara remembers her mother as her best friend. She knew her mother loved her unconditionally and always made herself available when needed. When the grandchildren were born, she continued to be that strong arm of love and support to each of them. Emma started working as a CNA for several area nursing homes and St. Luke's Hospital. She worked as a Dietary Aid at St. Joseph's Hospital and at City Park Manor Nursing Home. She was respected and admired by fellow co- workers and the patients placed in her charge. It was while working at the hospital; she met Jack Bailey, who also had served in the military. They exchanged vows on January 20, 1967. They shared many happy and precious moments together. Jack preceded her in death in 1985. She later reacquainted herself with Robert Dixon, who was school friend from Whittier Elementary. Robert would become a father and grandfather to her children. They enjoyed traveling and visiting "the Hills." They were both active in the Elks and the Lions Club. Robert preceded her in death. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Emma had attended worship service at Campbell Chapel for over twenty years. Emma was a fun loving woman who enjoyed life and those she encircled. In her free time, she enjoyed taking long drives, spending weekends in Colorado Springs. Her closest friends, Gwen Johnson, Mary E. Shepard and William Jackson will miss the camaraderie they all shared together and the fact that she was true and genuine friend. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful woman who had a beautiful sense of humor, carried a positive attitude and was known to function under intense pressure. To know Emma was to love her. Emma Dell Bailey departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on January 17, 2014, in Denver, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Barbara A. Shepard, Denver; one brother, Edward (Carolyn) Beard, Aurora and Ruth Beard, Denver; two grandchildren, Adriane P. (Justin) Lloyd, Plano, TX and Thomas Shepard III, Denver; 7 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild and a host of nieces nephews, cousins other relatives and many friends.
