Charles Wesley Butcher, Sr. was born on February 19, 1924, in Wisner, Louisiana to his parents, Titus Butcher and Angel Owens Butcher. He was eighth child of twenty children born in the family. He was blessed with eight brothers, Webster, Russell, Harold, Louis, John, Lynn, Titus, Jr., Lawrence and eleven sisters, Stazzie, Alice, Juanita, Maggie, Isaphena, Gladys, Clarice, Berteal, Geraldine, Arletha and Authoree. Growing up, Charles enjoyed sports and spending time with his siblings and friends. He received his formal education in Wisner where he attended the Wisner Colored School. On February 25, 1943, Charles enlisted in the United States Army. While serving his country, he was awarded an ATO Medal, EAMETO Medal, and a World War II Victory Medal. He served with honor and distinction and was honorably discharged at the rank of Tec 4. Charles was the proud father of three children, Charles, Jr., Angela and Earl. They shared many happy and precious moments together. Charles united in holy matrimony to the former Whitney Koonce. She remembers her husband as loving, devoted and hard working. He had the innate ability of making those around him feel welcome and as though they were the most important person in the world. They shared many happy and memorable moments together. Later his grandchildren were an additional source of joy and pride in his life. They too have many happy and memorable moments of time shared together. By profession, Charles was employed by the Keebler Company in their Maintenance Department. His coworkers and employers remember him as being hardworking, dependable and a man who performed his duties with excellence and precision. He retired after many years of faithful service. A man of faith and belief in the Lord, Charles has been a faithful member of Peoples Presbyterian Church for over 55 years. He has served his church and the Lord in many capacities. A crowning moment for Charles was being a part of the Church's Food Bank Ministry. It gave him great pride to be a part of a ministry that truly believed in lending a helping hand to others. He also shared a special closeness with his pastor, Reverend Ebenezer Yebuah. Charles was a fun loving man who enjoyed life and those encircled. In his free time, he could be found working in his garden and spending quality time with his family and friends. Charles was a charismatic man full of wisdom, knowledge, strength and courage. He was a man who gave love, showed love and knew he was loved. He wouldn't want tears because he is now in the arms of his Heavenly Father and with those who have preceded him in death. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful man who is now at peace. To know Charles was to love him.
