Annie Ruth Slaughter was born on February 9, 1937, in Shreveport, Louisiana to his parents, Bud McAlpin and Edna Washington McAlpin. She was the first born child in the family. She was raised surrounded by her sisters, Sandra and Donita. Annie eventually relocated to Denver, Colorado and completed her early education by graduating from East High School in 1955. On July 20, 1956, Annie united in holy matrimony to Ronald Leroy Slaughter. They first met at the Glenarm Recreation Center in Denver. To this union, three beautiful children, D'Ne, Cortney, and Clayton were born. They all shared many happy and precious memories together. D'Ne fondly remembers her mother making sure she was dressed properly for any occasion when leaving home. Clayton fondly remembers the camping trips to Lake McConaughy and the house parties at the family home. Later her grandchildren Roderick, Eric, Chris, Preston, Kimbra, Darius and Julianna were an additional source of joy and pride in her life. They too all have many happy and memorable moments of special time shared together. By profession, Annie was employed for a longtime by Governor Love as his personal secretary. She also was employed by Rocky Flats. She served as a Human Rights and Community Director for Mountain Bell and AT&T. She was also an EEOC employee for the Honorable Wellington Webb during his term as Mayor of the City and County of Denver. She retired in 2000. Having a need to continue working, she became an employee for Child Opportunity for some time after retiring. Annie was actively involved in several civic and community activities. She was a member of the Colorado Coalition of 100 Black Woman; she had been a member of the Denver Owl's Club since 1955. She received several awards for her outstanding leadership and dedication. She was recognized by her employer's over the years for outstanding work performance and always going beyond the call of duty. She was a member of a group of distinguished ladies affectionately called "The Motley Mama's" they shared many happy moments together. A woman of faith and belief in the Lord, Annie accepted the Lord as her personal savior at a very early age. She joined New Hope Baptist Church. She enjoyed the knowledge she gained as she worshipped the Lord. Annie was a fun loving woman, who enjoyed life and those she encircled. Some of other close friends were, Shirley Sims, Esliva Hilton, Myrna Durley, Shirley Hollingsworth and Janice Gaskin. They will all miss the camaraderie they shared together and the fact that she was a true and genuine friend. She will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known this kind and wonderful woman. To know Annie was to love her. She is preceded in death by a son, Cortney Slaughter; her parents, Bud and Edna McAlpin; a sister Sandra Lewis; grandson son, Roderick Slaughter. Annie Ruth Slaughter departed this life to the embrace of the Lord on September 25, 2013, in Aurora, Colorado. Those left to cherish her memory and mourn her loss include her son, Clayton J. (Christina) Slaughter of Lisbon, Maine; her daughter, D'Ne Slaughter of Denver; one sister, Donita McAlpin, Shreveport, LA; six grandchildren; five great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and many friends.
