January 12, 1951 ~ January 3, 2019

Born in: Denver, Colorado
Resided in: Denver, Colorado

Roderick Bernard Curtis was born on January 12, 1951, in Denver, Colorado, to his parents, Bennie L. Curtis, and Oneida Curtis.  He was the firstborn child and was privileged to share his childhood with his siblings, Tony, and Gregory.  As a child, Roderick was active and loved to play hard, as boys do.

Roderick received his formal education in the Denver Public Schools District.  In 1978, He graduated from Manual High School.  With a made-up mind, Roderick continued his education by attending Barbering School.  He obtained his Barbering License, and later became a Master Barber.  His skills excelled the expectations of most.

While working in the Barbershop, Mr. Curtis met a young lady, Denise Walker.  He and Denise started dating, and on June 8, 1981, in Denver, Colorado, they were married.  Roderick made it a regular practice of serenading Denise with Luther Vandross songs.  To this union, two children were born, Shauntae, and Raushanah.  Denise preceded Roderick in death.   Later, Roderick met Jonnie Brown.  On June 3, 2003, they became one in holy matrimony.  They loved spending time together.  Although no children were born to this union, they were able to share the love they had for all of his children, Dedrice, Raushanah, Shauntae, Dazha, and Desirae.  Roderick was later blessed with a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called him, “Paw-Paw.”

Roderick loved the Lord with all of his heart.  He was a faithful member, Deacon and Trustee of Holy Spirit Missionary Baptist Church for many years.

By profession, Roderick was a Master Barber.  He worked in the Hollywood Barbershop.  He loved the barbershop, and all of his friends and comrades with whom he worked, in particularly his right hand, Jason.  Jason Shiver would take Roderick places and they would just, “Kick it,” as he would explain.  Jason and Ray Brewer (deceased) were his kickin’ it buddies, but his “running buddy” was is grandson, Mekhi. Roderick will be best remembered for his favorite phrases, “Hi Honey,” and “Bless your heart.”  He will be missed by all of his friends and family; he was a friend to all.

Roderick was preceded in death by his parents, Bennie L. and Oneida Curtis; and his brother, Tony Curtis.

Roderick Bernard Curtis departed this life on January 3, 2019, in Aurora, Colorado.  He leaves to cherish his memory and mourn his loss, his children, Dedrice Curtis-Washington, Raushanah Traxler, Shauntae Curtis, Dazha Mannani, Desirae Sanders; his siblin, Gregory Curtis (Cheryl); host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law, Venus Walker; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
