February 26, 1934 ~ February 15, 2019

Born in: Malvern, AK
Resided in: Aurora, CO

In the county of Hot Springs, the town of Malvern, in the state of Arkansas, on February 26, 1934, Edward and Annie Sanders were blessed with the birth of one, Gracie Lee Sanders, the youngest of 10 children.  She fit her position well as “The Baby Girl.”

At the young age of 20, Gracie was married to Johnny Hamm and started a family in Malvern, Arkansas.  A handful of years later, they moved to Denver, Colorado, where she had the remainder of her ten children.

The relocation was hard on Gracie, she survived a divorce and was determined to raise all 10 of her children relying on the help of God.  She became a member of True Faith Church of God in Christ, and the Lord surrounded her with love and support, keeping her focus on Christ.  Missionary Betts’ walk with God and became a lot closer when she was blessed with a God sent husband, Walter N. Betts, who was willing to take on Gracie’s full house.  After strong persuasion in a short time, he converted to Church of God in Christ, and by that time she was ready to marry.

This marriage was a partnership in love, the two of them set out to do the work of the Lord. Opening a church in Denver on Champa Street.  The congregation was seven (7) kids making a joyful noise… this became a building in progress for several years, and several locations later, Aurora Church of God in Christ was established; here the tree had taken root.

Upon starting St. John Aurora Church of God in Christ, Missionary Betts served her husband, her pastor, and her church with dignity and respect. After Transitioning from First Lady to the Church Mother under Pastor Debra Clay; Gracie for over 30 years held her positions at St John Church of God in Christ, and now she will be ushered into the gates of Heaven where she will once again be reunited with her husband Pastor Walter N. Betts, her son David Glenn Hamm, her daughter Ruthie Hamm, and her daughters, Sandra Jeffreys and Joyce Stewart.  She was also preceded in death by her parents and 10 siblings.

Our heavenly father saw fit to reward Missionary Gracie Lee Betts with a set of wings on February 15, 2019; Spending 84 years with us.  Missionary Betts leaves behind 6 children, 25 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Mother your success in life will always be ingrained in our hearts forever.

May you Rest in peace until we meet again…

  3. To the Family and Friends of Gracie Lee Betts

Please allow me to express my condolences for the loss of your dear loved one. The pain and sorrow experienced during this difficult time can be overwhelming. However, I am often comforted by the words found in God’s word, the Bible. For instance, when grieving the loss of his dear friend Lazarus, the Bible reports that “Jesus gave way to tears.” (John 11:35). What is even more comforting is the fact that Jesus resurrected Lazarus from the dead, and so like Mary and Martha, Lazarus’ sisters, the Bible expresses the hope of the resurrection whereby we may see our loved ones again. (Read John 11:38-44; 5:28, 29). What a marvelous hope.

May Jehovah God grant you peace during this time and provide comfort for you and your loved ones.

Words can’t express how saddened I am to hear of your loss. My sincere sympathies to you and your family. I pray the love of God enfolds you during this difficult time. May your many memories of Mother Gracie Betts help to sustain you at this most difficult time. She was a woman of grace and peace. I will always remember Mother Betts and her 10 children that I had the opportunity to grow up with! I have wonderful memories of many times spent with her stopping by my parents home (Late Pastor and 1st LadyHill), discussing the Bible and church she and Pastor Betts. Our family’s cried and laughed together. Joyce, Sandra, Jonnie, Bernice, LeOtis, Timmy, Sam, David, and Ruthie we all spent many days and nights in church, sometimes free will and sometimes against our wills. But we Thank God for our Parents!! She leaves behind a wonderful family and I know you will all be a great source of comfort and support to one another. I love you all Evangelist Felicia Hill-Horne
